The name calico corners keeps coming to mind…

Anyways, it's a pattern. I've seen calico fabric before.

Because the wind is high, it blows my mind.

It's indeed a very cool name.

According to the Paul biography I got for my birthday earlier this month, “Flaming Pie ” refers to John Lennon 's favorite story for the origin of the name “Beatles”. I oughta check it out some time, for all the praise you guys are giving it.

Many people ask what are Beatles? Why Beatles? Ugh, Beatles, how did the name arrive? So we will tell you. It came in a vision–a man appeared in a flaming pie and said unto them “From this day on you are Beatles with an A.” “Thank you, Mister Man,” they said, thanking him.

Does this count as a double post even if my first one was 4 1/2 months ago?

Yesterday I picked up Flaming Pie and Memory Almost Full at a used record store for less than $12 USD total.

I haven't listened to MAF yet, but this album is fantastic. So far The World Tonight, Young BoyUsed To Be Bad and the title track are my favorites. When I listen to an album for the first time, I usually favor the rockers. I can easily see the slower ones growing on me quickly as well.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Thanks so much to all who recommended it. mal-evans

I read mith's post first and I thought she meant a “crime” as in highway robbery.
Then I read your post…

This may be a new record for time elapsed between death and resurrection of a thread, but I’d like to say I just got Flaming Pie  yesterday, and it’s great. Highlights for me are Flaming Pie , The Songs We Were Singing, and Beautiful Night. Calico Skies is pretty great too, but the Good Evening New York City  version is perfect. Just perfect. Blows me away every time. By the way, does the beginning of If You Wanna remind anyone else of The Ballad Of John And Yoko , or am I crazy?

A noticeably different mix of Somedays from a Capitol Records sampler – info can be found here (its a cached copy of the page as the regular site wouldnt load). Its not as gorgeous as the album mix but is still great to hear.

Overall a good album but its quite inconsistent. When you’ve got classics such as Somedays, Calico Skies and The World Tonight along side rubbish (in my opinion) like Really Love You and Used To Be Bad, it makes the album very inconsistent. However the good tracks outweigh the few clunkers

Two Ahhh Girl-type observations about Heaven on a Sunday

Peaceful, like heaven on a Sunday

Is eternity divided up into days, weeks, years, etc.?

And if I only had one love
Yours would be the one I’d choose

Made me think of the lyrics from Another Girl .

always loved this album. often sorrow has driven Paul to give his best and at that time Linda was ill and maybe even having renewed collaboration with The Beatles, digging in their past, helped him. The world tonight is a great rock, souvenirs is pure soul, heaven on a sunday, somedays…so many beatiful songs…little willow (this one is dedicated to the memory of Maureen, ex Ringo’s wife). one of Paul best achievements for me

Listening now!

‘Tis rather Beatley…

I am in love with the guitar on The Song We Were Singing– such a lovely memoir of the good old Beatledays; the line in The World Tonight ‘I go back so far I’m in front of me’ reminds me of Any Road: ‘It’s so far out the way out is in’; If You Wanna has got a nice beat, and the super-quick guitar strums reminds me of something Pink Floyd-ish, but otherwise I’m not loving it; Somedays is gorgeous and moving, it’s got a sort of vaguely Celtic-folk feel, and those finger-picked arpeggios are divine and OH MY I just got to the instrumental break oh WOW that’s beautiful; the rhythm guitar on Young Boy reminds me of a Harrisong, though I’m not sure which yet (or perhaps I’m thinking of Handle With Care? which is not quite a Harrisong but almost) and what just happened to the tempo; Calico Skies is lovely as ever, I’m going to learn it sometime, that I will, though I don’t understand why it’s called Calico Skies, I’ve not heard skies described as looking like ‘calico’ before; Flaming Pie is a bit WHAAAT; the guitar on Heaven On A Sunday is vaguely David Gilmour-esque; Used To Be Bad is okay, the most memorable bit was me hearing the singing and saying THAT’S NOT PAUL; I have decided my favourite line from a Paul solo song ever is ‘Every little thing is gonna come right in the end’ from Souvenir; Little Willow is beautiful and heartfelt, the production is really nice, and without the video I can listen to it without losing it; Really Love You is only okay, but what’s funny is that George has a song by nearly the same title on Gone Troppo (‘I Really Love You’); Beautiful Night is nice, but it sounds a bit like an Air Supply song to my ears, and while Air Supply is great, I don’t care to hear Paul doing it– the ending is great though; the opening of Great Day sounds like Blackbird , and It Won’t Be Long no no no no no– (!).

And there ya go. Overall, a good album– 2.5 out of five apples; some songs are really fab, others not so much, but That’s The Way It Goes. My favourites are the more ballad-type numbers, because as ever, I am a sucker for Paul’s ballads.

A little too much drudge for me. Both ‘Used To Be Bad’ and ‘Really Love You’ are dire bores, ‘Looking For You’ should have replaced one of them.

I find most of Paul’s albums to follow that pattern (sorry Paulfans).

I’ll concur with ye there, but I like pretty much all the other songs. paul-mccartney-thumb_gif Ten or twelve out of fourteen is not half bad– I don’t expect to adore every single track from an album.
