…And I didn’t like it. At all.
I feel like a bad person now.
“Driving Rain ” was the last Paul album I really honestly paid attention to. After that one came out, I got married, had kids, advanced my career and generally stopped paying attention to Paul’s work. I remember liking the album, but it hasn’t been played in a decade.
Last night I decided to sit down and re-listen to it, mostly because I was in a melancholy mood and I remember how DR seemed very “relevant” after 9/11.
It sounded empty and kind of false. The lyrics seemed to be written so purposely that it rang hollow.
So I went back and sampled his previous works and it wasn’t until “Flowers In The Dirt ” that I felt like I was hearing something that (to me) meant something.
Is anyone else in the same boat?

I like the album and I think he’s had a great late-career run of albums beginning with the superb Flaming Pie , but I think Driving Rain is the weakest in that string.

I don’t like Driving Rain either. I agree totally with Satan that it has a false, hollow feel, especially lyrically – plus there’s a shocking absence of arresting melodies for a McCartney record, and the production really grates on me.
However, if you never carried on with his work after Driving Rain then I would certainly encourage you to push on and get Chaos And Creation In The Backyard . Not only does it boast some fantastic production from Radiohead’s Nigel Godrich, but it seems to me to have the most emotional content of all his post-Beatles records and some of his best songs for absolutely ages. Memory Almost Full and Electric Arguments are pretty strong as well; let’s just hope his next one manages to uphold his late-career run of acclaim!

Offline I have a real dislike for Driving Rain . I haven’t played it for long time but I remember upon first listening found it to be bland and offering nothing, like Paul was phoning it in going thru the motions of making a record. A few years later I went back to the From A Lover To A Friend cd-single (I played all the Paul cd-singles I had thru) and my word was I bored by the whole thing. Its not that the song annoys me, it just doesn’t do anything, which might be far worse than annoy.
Driving Rain sits in the total guff pile with Give My Regards, Press To Play and Memory Almost Full , the albums I never listen to.

Offline As I’m not a massive hardcore McCartney (solo) fan, I didn’t/don’t feel too bad about not liking it but I do feel like I should like it, even if only a little bit. I mean it is Paul McCartney . But then I listen to it again, hoping to change my mind, and… no. I still don’t like it.

Offline I don’t think it’s coincidence that the one blemish on his otherwise great run of albums starting in 1997 is the one (Driving Rain ) where he was with Heather 
Rinse the Raindrops is a great song, though. Lonely Road (about losing Linda) is good, too. The rest is just “meh.”

Can’t say I’m a big fan, never really listen to it. I don’t listen to most of his 80’s/90’s/2000’s stuff (with the exception of Chaos and Creation, which I think is pretty good). Not really a fan of that style of music during that era, have it be Paul or anyone else. I listen to Ram and McCartney and all the Wings albums…. but that’s pretty much it. I’m just more of a 60’s and 70’s fan with most music (except of course electronic, which I am also a big fan).

Offline Yes, it’s weak. BUT, I have always loved “Lonely Road”
The title song, depending on my mood, I’m fine with.
Some songs I would put in the “experimental” category and would be better served on … an experimental album, e.g. a Fireman album.
Ironically, “Sing the Changes” belongs on a true McCartney album.

Offline Driving Rain really isn’t too fantastic, but I still enjoy it. It took time, at first I thought it was too boring, but now it’s alright. My favorite now is Spinning On An Axis, I like how he says that.

Haha, I was thinking that too. I don’t even like watching interviews from when he was with that vile woman…. ugh…. it’s just….
After reading this thread I decided to listen to Flaming Pie last night, which I don’t often do. It’s pretty good!

I have watched some, but it’s hard! I just know that she’s toying with his poor heart the whole time and it makes me sad for him!

Offline Was reading an article on Pauls new album that looked at songs he had written for his ex-wives and one was called Heather after Lady Mucca (I didn’t have a clue that the song existed and its not like Paul is ever going to sing it again, unless there are some major lyric alterations). Anyway it reminded me of a lovely fun demo he recorded back in the 60’s also called Heather (I believe for Linda’s daughter but someone might know exactly). So here it is (it might belong more in a different thread but I couldn’t think where).

Offline This discussion has really sparked my interest in the album. It is one of the ones in the big stack I am working through – I’ll pop back and comment when I get to it.
I found the added track thing interesting – it is the only time I have been able to overcome my ‘perfection obsession’ enough to write a track name on an album booklet. I tried to match the handwriting feel of the whole thing as much as possible but it still looks a bit dodgy, I try to tell myself it is the exception which makes the rest of my CDs look so good

Offline This lyric from the title track popped into my mind this morning.

It got me thinking about All Together Now
“One two three four/ Can I have a little more? / Five six seven eight nine ten / I love you.”
Then I was thinking about Paul’s voice on each of those parts.
The counting parts are at the beginning of each song. There is a little funny talking part with all 4 Beatles at the beginning of the All Together Now video.

Offline I got it about a month ago, and it’s OK, but it’s certainly the weakest of the incredible string of albums from Flaming Pie to NEW (and possibly beyond).
