Back To The Egg is one of my favorite Paul albums, and possibly my second favorite Wings one. My favourite tracks are Getting Closer, Again and Again and Again, Old Siam Sir, Arrow Through Me and Love Awake.

I know that’s quite a long list but in my opinion there is not a weak track, even stuff like Reception and The Broadcast are short enough so they don’t get annoying.

There is one thing though, I think Baby’s Request is quite a weak closer, Goodnight Tonight should have been in it’s place.

[Thought of posting in another thread but didn’t know which one and as we don’t have a Back To The Egg thread why not create one.]

Wasn’t there one where trcanberra (I think) spoke of buying some special edition through ebay and then we all made dumb egg puns?

I have memories that he was going to buy the standard cd and the dealer pulled out of the sale. I would do a search but looking for back might take a bit of time to find it. Oh, wait google search deluxe edition.

*scrambles around*

Eggsactly.  And AG – erm – yes, it was an interesting thread and I’m happy enough to have the ‘standard’ CD – though that box looked SO good.

On the album, I still don’t know how I missed it as I had the albums before and after it back then.  Ah well, looking forward to getting to it later this century.

You’ll get there before Paul and his archive team do, trcanberra.

This isn’t the first time I’ve voiced my love for Back To The Egg . Honestly, outside of Band On The Run , Wings albums have always been spotty affairs for me. I like them much more as a singles band. Didn’t John like this album, too? Seems as though I remember reading that he did. I always enjoy reading John’s thoughts on Paul’s music. I like to picture him sitting in the Dakota, spinning Back To The Egg and saying “nice one, Paul.” Or “what the bloody hell were you thinking with this one?” Even when their estrangement was in full force, I think John was always curious to hear what Paul was up to musically. Interestingly, Paul seems to have avoided discussing John’s solo work back then. Maybe it was a verboten subject when he gave interviews. Or maybe I just haven’t seen the right interviews.

Does anyone know what the second part of this line means in Arrow Thru Me: “You wouldn’t have found a more down hero, If you’d had started at nothing and counted to zero.”

Surely if you start at nothing than you are already at zero so even if she went searching for a hero then her search wouldnt have lasted that long, perhaps a second, two if she struggles.a-hard-days-night-paul-9

I think he used zero because it rhymed and also the phrase from zero to hero possibly. Seems to just be emphasizing that the hero was really down and out/low with nothing and zero being the lower than any number logically. But yeah wouldn’t be much of a search using his lyrics.

What on earth was Paul on when recording this during/after the ‘BttE sessions? Brilliant in its WTF manner.

The lyrics are here – amazingly Paul took 10 minutes to write them.

It’s a pretty nice album, energetic and more rocking (I love to hear more rock from Paul) but it’s kinda emptier on that “soul” side. It’s not that I can find a really bad song here, but they’re not quite there. My favorites are Getting closer, Spin it on, Old Siam, Sir, To you and that great song Daytime Nighttime Suffering. Oh, and Winter rose is nice kind of mellow. But Daytime Nighttime Suffering! Perfect example of an excellent pop song.

I listened to it again today and it seems that every time i do it feels more like a lot of it is forced, like the band are not quite right (tho maybe they are and just play it like that). Paul is on record saying that he was unsure if he wanted to build up the band in its third guise and go thru it all again and im not too sure he was too satisfied with the line-up.

It is an enjoyable album which lacks that spark to get it close to great.

And because i never have any idea what the hell Paul is singing during it here are the lyrics to ‘Old Siam, Sir”

In a village in Old Siam, sir, there’s a lady who’s lost her way.
In an effort to find a man, sir, she found herself in the old UK.
She waited ’round in Walthamstowe, she skated ’round in Scarborough.
She waited ’round in Walthamstowe, she skated ’round in Scarborough.
In a village in old east end, sir, she met a fellow who made her real.
Took her rushes to show, this man, sir,
He met her dad at the wedding meal.

[guitar solo]

In a letter from Old Siam, sir, came an awful tale of woe.
She decided the only answer was to get off a pile of dough.
She waited ’round in Walthamstowe, she skated ’round in Scarborough.
She waited ’round in Walthamstowe, she skated ’round in Scarborough.
When a relative told her man, sir, he directed her not to stay.
In a village in Old Siam, sir, there’s a lady who’se lost her way.

[guitar solo]

In a village in Old Siam, sir, there’s a lady who’se lost her way.
In an effort to find a man, sir, she found herself in the old UK.
She waited ’round in Walthamstowe, she skated ’round in Scarborough.
She waited ’round in Walthamstowe, she skated ’round in Scarborough.

[repeat first two lines of last verse, then repeat until fade:]
Walthamstowe . . . Scarborough . . .

Unfortunately that’s the album that was the turning point “for me”.   Although ‘Old Siam, Sir” isn’t a bad song, I can’t get into the rest of it. paul-mccartney

Heard an interesting clip on the radio last night. After the badly failed 1984 “Give My Regards To Broadway” movie flopped, Paul McCartney finally started going back to playing Beatles songs in his stage shows.  I didn’t realize this was the turning point (If that is true), but like I said “Back To The Egg ” was my turning point.

Paul was playing Beatles songs in Wings from 1975 onwards; 4 or 5 are on ‘Wings Over America ‘.

Additionally Paul didnt tour for 5 years after ‘Give My Regards To Broadway’ came out, one heck of a delay between the two events.

Back To The Egg is definitely my fav Wings album and probably my fav Wings line up.  Pity it was the last…

Some cracking songs on there, “Spin It On”, “Old Siam Sir” and “Getting Closer” in particular.  I play bass in a band and when we’re doing a soundcheck or just generally setting up our amps etc I always play that funky bass riff from the beginning of “Reception”.  So cool!  Sadly no-one ever seems to recognise it though…

I haven’t listened to this album since my high school radio club, we had a copy and played it to death but for some reason I only recall Old Siam, Sir, Getting Closer and the Rockestra Theme. The cover was bizarre, and even then it seemed like the oomph was gone. I’ll have to listen again and see if it’s improved with age.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

While listening to this album this morning, I got the distinct feeling that After the Ball was Paul singing about Linda being there for him and picking him up after the end of The Beatles. The song has somewhat of a funeral dirge sound to it.

After the ball, after the ball, you were the one out in the hall
You were the one, the one who would love me, after the ball.
After the ball, after the ball, you were the one out in the hall
You were the one, the one who would love me, after the ball.

Well, I arrived, looked around but the room was full of strangers
Nowhere was a freindly face to be found.
Later on, I awoke, but the party it was over
There you were waiting to bring me ’round.

I just watched some of the Back To The Egg tv special. OMG, Paul looks like he stepped back in time 20 years. He could be on the stage at the Cavern Club.

The pictures don’t do a lot of justice to what you see on the video, but here are a few screenshots.

Second thought for this post………….

Lyrics from Again and Again and Again:

No you don’t want to be the little woman
I love. No, no, no, no. I love.
Now you don’t wanna stay in my school
You don’t wanna be the one that’s cool.

Oh, yes, I do, Paul. beatlemaniacs_02_gif

Thinking about Paul’s relationship with school and his life makes his use of these lyrics interesting. He didn’t want to stay in school. He wanted to go off to Scotland and Hamburg. Paul’s school of life was way cooler than Liverpool Institute.
