The whole McCartney/Lennon songwriting change was such a bore. Does it really matter two vegetarian sausages who comes first? Does anyone really look at a song like Yesterday and think that because Lennon comes first he wrote most of it?
I always liked the way the pop/funk/soul group War solved the problem: They put all the names of the band on every song on every album regardless of who wrote what, in alphabetical order so that the order does not reflect primacy of person:
S. Allen/H. Brown/M. Dickerson/L. Jordan/ C. Miller/L. Oskar/H. Scott
(Thomas) Sylvester “Papa Dee” Allen — congas, percussion
Harold Brown — drums
Morris “Bee Bee” Dickerson — bass
Lonnie Jordan — keyboards, vocals, timbales
Charles Miller — tenor sax, flute
Lee Oskar — harmonica, vocals
Howard Scott — guitar, vocals
One can readily see (and if one knows their music) that the first two names listed — the conga drummer and the drummer — are not major contributors to the songwriting of their music. The main writers were Lonnie Jordan (4th listed) and Howard Scott (last listed).
If the Beatles had followed this style, every song on every album would have been credited as “Harrison/Lennon/McCartney/Starkey”

^^ I can’t see Lennon or McCartney ever being okay with that.
Duran Duran did a similar thing, but in reverse alphabetical order, which made the credits rather amusing (Taylor/Taylor/Taylor/Rhodes/Le Bon).

Queen nearly disbanded due to song copyrights and solved the problem by crediting each song to Queen from The Miracle onwards. I don’t think its that uncommon. But two egos the size of John and Pauls during a period when tensions were high and money was low and they had getting screwed over Northern Songs?
Jeremy Hillary Boob Ph.D. (aka Dick Emery) recorded a new first verse for Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (RM20, below), for inclusion in Yellow Submarine , and one story goes that John refused to release it because Dick would get some of the royalties.

I’ve always found it admirable that despite Thom Yorke being their primary songwriter, Radiohead credit all their songs as “Radiohead”, without exception. It’s nice to think that they’re perfectly happy to circumvent ego struggles, especially being a band that garner such huge critical and commercial attention.
As for the “feud”, it’s just press fodder. Once a year without fail the Daily Mail screams “ONO NOT INVITED TO MACCA PARTY” or “YOKO SLAMS MCCARTNEY.” Yoko summed it up very well once when she said something like “the press like to go on about Paul and I fighting and making up because they’ve got nothing else interesting to talk about.”

And remember Yoko’s admission to Charlie Swan, her tarot card reader (see “Dakota Days,” John Green, pg 233-34) that she knew all along that Paul was attracted to her and that made John jealous. That was one of the reasons Paul & John had their falling out….jealousy over Paul’s attraction to Yoko. So, maybe this is her motive to keep the feud rumors going every so often…cuz Paul really has the hots for her and she gets off on that.

I do think Paul is taking the high road (which he’s typically done when it comes to Yoko). Remember, over the years, nearly ALL of the nasty things he’s said about her in the press have been because she’s made some brutal comments about him or Linda to push his buttons.

I thought we’d come to the conclusion that Yoko was jealous because of the John and Paul love affair. Now we have Paul lusting after Yoko! Surely someone has written that there was an attraction between John and Linda, so if we add in George having a bit of a thing with Maureen at one time, which did happen, we would be on the road to a Beatles free for all (here’s hoping there are major roadworks and the transport breaks down before it arrives at such a destination).

There is a long-held rumor that Yoko shagged Paul before she decided to go after John. Both flatly deny it, and I don’t see how it could be true, either. But there you are.

I’ve heard the rumour that Yoko made a beeline for Paul before she bagged a Lennon, haven’t heard that they were getting it on however. The rumour revolved around Yoko’s request to Paul towards an exhibition (either financial or the power of having a Beatle in attendance on opening night); depending on the source Yoko was making a play for Paul and the whole exhibit story was just a front. Paul politely declined instead pointing her in John’s direction.

The true story is that she approached Paul at his home asking for some handwritten Beatles lyrics for an exhibit she wanted to put on. Paul said he was too busy and told her to check with John instead. If only he’d known what wheels he set in motion when he did that…

Did that exhibit even happen? Wasn’t she supposed to be gathering them for John Cale (she was his assistant at the time)?

Don’t know if it ever opened. She’s (falsely) claimed she had “no idea” who the Beatles were before she met Paul and then John, but it does smack a bit of groupie behavior, IMO.

I don’t believe for one moment that there is any truth to Yoko’s fantasy that Paul had the hots for her. I believe she told Charlie Swan that Paul wanted her (hence, he put it in his book). But, we all know Yoko’s truth is not the same as ours. I think we’d have a better argument about which Beatle hated Yoko more: George or Paul. They despised her being included in recording sessions. They despised what she was doing to John. Paul is taking the high road today ending the “feud”. But that doesn’t mean he really likes her. And, I firmly believe he never did. (Remember his visiting and concern for Cynthia…and Hey Jude ?) That isn’t a sign of his having the hots for Yoko Oh No.

That’s a very colorful, provocative line: “…what wheels he’d set in motion when he did that…” I feel like it should be accompanied by dramatic, ominous-sounding music. Badass music.

I browsed the article that was linked to in the first post of this thread. I had to laugh when I saw that the article was written about…an article in Rolling Stone. Will Rolling Stone now feature an article about the Daily Mail article? Hilarious.
In any event, I just picked up the RS issue that featured the article. When Paul said Yoko was badass, it was not a new revelation being reported by RS. Rather, they were relaying info about things he had done/said in the past. Apparently, it was a slow news day for the Daily Mail as they were treating the comments as something that had just happened.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
