This may fall under What Was Paul Thinking?…it just struck me as funny. I read where Paul sent a letter to President Aquino of the Phillippines requesting him to save an elephant in the Manila Zoo named Mali. It was a noble and necessary jesture (so like Paul) but apparently he’s forgotten about the concert there in 1966 (?) where they (well, Brian Epstein) accidently snubbed Imelda Marcos and her family for a private family breakfast and were so badly treated by the police who were ushering them off the island that John vowed he’d never even fly over the country again! George had some equally hateful things to say about the experience. It amuses me that now Paul is asking the President there to help him save an elephant! John & George are either roliing over in their graves or laughing their butts off!

Though, of course, you should remember that in 1966 the Philippines was a dictatorship, whereas now it is a democracy.

I don’t see why George or John would be laughing about Paul trying to save an Elephant from cruelty. Far better he tries to stop it than nothing because of something that happened 47 years ago.

Oligarchy tbh, coming from someone living there personally. It wasn’t a dictatorship back in 1966, the so-called “dictatorship” happened around his second term where he had an “affair”. Imelda man-handled Ferdinand and the rest is history. The Philippines was in its “prime” during the “dictatorship”.
Then we had the icon of “democracy”: Corazon Aquino, coming from a line of rich Chinese hacienderos (land lords), also the mother of the incumbent president. The Constitution (1987) was revised by the Catholic priests, I’d laugh at some of the provisions honestly, clearly designed by the legislators to corrupt lol. And to this day there isn’t a successful attempt to revise the Constitution, the priests being the obstacle. The haciendero family, as well as other families monopolised some of the products like beer, tobacco, and the like. There are outrageous taxes for imports, and the country brags the cheapest beer and cigarettes…
I’d like to talk more about this but I hate my country with a long list why.
And here I am studying at a government owned university, University of the Philippines, biting the hand that feeds me.

I never meant to imply that Paul’s act of trying to save the elephant was laughable. It is awesome! It just struck me as ironic that he is having to plead with a government (no matter what the history has turned out to be) who treated them so badly so many years ago. John & George might be laughing if they are remembering their experience there. Otherwise, I’m sure they would be saying “Way to go, Paul!”

I’d like to add that Paul said “Shalom” in the end of the Anthology version of Dig A Pony .
