I now have “Choba B” on the way to go with my earlier purchase of “Devil”.
It’s interesting that they are both albums of covers from around the same period in music history. Any thoughts from those who have them on how they compare, musically or stylistically?

Out of the two I prefer Choba. It’s a much more relaxed recording as it was done for fun and not planned for release at the time, whereas Devil is more polished as it was always the next album.
It should be no surprise that the songs all date from around the same, they come from the days before he was THE Paul McCartney , to times when things were simpler, and there were no expectations. The Choba sessions were two days after the failure of Press To Play , Devil was recorded in the wake of Linda’s death. Paul has always shown a liking to Get Back , hoping it will bring some clarity to the situation.

I like both of these, but contrary to mja, I prefer Run Devil Run . I feel like it’s less forced than Choba.

^ Yay – looks like 2 great CDs on the way.
And I may have got the title wrong, no commas in “Run Devil Run “? Seen it both ways on the net now.

For some reason, commas are often admitted from album and song titles. That doesn’t stop a spelling & grammar freak like me from putting them back in. See: “Thank You, Girl;” “Good Morning, Good Morning;” “Cry, Baby, Cry.”
Let’s also not forget that, like Kisses On The Bottom , Paul threw in a few of his own compositions on Run Devil Run , making Back in the U.S.S.R. (let’s just call it by its general English translation, shall we?) his only true all-covers album.

Have you listened to either/both yet? Or just played the covers? Just curious to hear what you think.
And…

No, no, no! It is called Choba b CCCP. That’s where it was released, and its title! We all know what it stands for, but he didn’t call it Back In The USSR ! Choba b CCCP! Repeat after me…

^ No, I haven’t listened to them as yet. As noted in another post I have around 50 ‘Beatley’ CDs and DVDs to catch up on, and I listen to each at least twice to get a good feel for the music. So, it could be a few months before I get to them (I am only up to Rubber Soul at the moment, after Beatles come Harrison, then Lennon, then McCartney etc.).
I am also just listening / watching one new item per day to make it all last
Though I will make an exception for “New” and the BBC volume 2 set and listen the day I get them.

Ooo… I think you should move them up up your list as you asked for opinions! How we know if we’re pointing you the right way if we have to wait months? I know you have a big pile, but what do I say when next you ask for an opinion on something and still have no idea whether this opinion made sense or not! Disappointed face!

^ ha ha – good points. I’ll make sure I’m a bit more current when I ask next time.
Oh, and I’d love to listen to them earlier, but I followed cbatcu’s advice on flipping a coin on the ‘listen in order or jump around a bit’ conundrum I had and it came up ‘listen in order’ – which also makes it a little easier to remember what I still have to listen to

I would usually agree with the wonderful cbatcu (or else she might beat me up!), however while listening to original albums in order is a good idea to see how a songwriter develops, I don’t think that counts when it comes to wholly/largely cover version albums, as they are probably pretty much as always bar the additional musicians.

Yikes! I’ve already started conflict between two wonderful forum dwellers.
Shall I suggest a best of three at rock, paper, scissors to settle the matter?

Well, mja6758, I guess you will have to wend your way to Oz and find a sneaky way to switch out the cds in his player.

Good luck with that – “Revolver ” is up next and I haven’t listened to that in 26 years and am SO looking forward to it

Ooooo, don’t come between a fan and his “Revolver “.
When I am listening through my Beatles and Paul records in alphabetical order, I get stuck on “R”. Rubber Soul and Revolver .
