@Bongo You didn’t read the full discussion as I’d mentioned Elvis and Tina Turner as examples in my first response.

I think the problem is that when Macca collaborates with these artists, it becomes more a commercial scene than a musical scene. That is one thing that perturbs me about Paul appearing with the pop artists of today, the fact that he carries with him such a musically rich background only to now collaborate with the likes of Rihanna (no offense intended). By the way, I’m not denying that I never listened to the contemporary pop but since the time I started listening to the classic rock and rock n roll of the 60s and the 70s (I’m still discovering songs) my musical taste has matured a lot (otherwise I’d have pop songs in my phone instead of the Beatles’ ). I tried to give Taylor Swift’s ’89 album a listen and before the song was even finished I shut the youtube tab.
I know the Beatles tried to go commercial too but then they matured musically, they remained true to their motivations whatever reception their music received. But then of course, Paul is free to do whatever he wants and this is no 60s and 70s so we can’t blame him much.
All of this makes me think what John would have done were he with us today. I think he would collaborate with these artists but for political ends and not necessarily for music in itself.

I think Paul likes their music is one of the reasons he is collaborating.

I think another reason is that when Paul collaborates a lot of pressure of the critics is taken off his shoulders as he is not the sole weigh-carrier (not that Paul listens too much to his critics anyway).
If John was making music today he would be doing the same as Paul, making music with whomever he so chose for whatever purpose with the attitude of to those who didnt like it. One of my favourite John quotes is “It doesn’t matter about people not liking our records, or not liking the way we look, or what we say. You know, they’re entitled to not like us. And we’re entitled not to have anything to do with them if we don’t want to, or not to regard them. We’ve all got our rights, you know, Harold.” I really like the middle sentence “they’re entitled to not like us. And we’re entitled not to have anything to do with them if we don’t want to, or not to regard them“.

Examiner report that another artist Paul has been working with is Lady Gaga and that pictures of them together in the recording studio are on Lady Gaga’s Instagram page.

Lady Gaga is a horrible person who stole another person’s song and then sued her. The judge of course ruled in Lady Gaga’s favor.

John would be working with the same kinds of people that Yoko does–indie rock people who have real talent.

^ That real talent thing is subjective since there are talented people in all branches of music it just might not be to your personal taste.

I think that’s difficult to tell. Remember, John’s ’70s collaborations were with Elton John and David Bowie, both major artists. And, remember, Yoko and Gaga seem to have a mutual appreciation thing going on, and have worked together. It’s just as likely he’d be working with Gaga alongside Paul.
I do wonder about some of Paul’s choices about people he’s willing to work with since he gave up the wacky baccy in 2012 though. Maybe someone should roll him a big fat Camberwell Carrot and tell him to be more choosey.

Bowie was a major artist, but is well respected today, and worked with other talented people like Brian Eno. Bowie made forays into pop, but also did other kinds of music.
As I said above, I own some Lady Gaga so I can’t really talk. I do recall Gaga and Yoko exchanging compliments or whatever…but I don’t really see it. Gaga has some catchy songs, but she’s all over-the-top sensationalism in my opinion.

I don’t think that is necessary since it is good to have people on a forum have different opinions about things. As long as you love the Beatles than its all right.

It is a common criticism of pop music in today’s world, especially among indie rock fans, that the artists often don’t write their own songs. What is implied is that the artists don’t have integrity. Elvis and Frank Sinatra had integrity. While the criticism may be widespread (and has been for a long time) it doesn’t make it a correct assessment. Ignore whether they are songwriters or not, and concentrate on the type of career they choose to pursue. My alarm bells go off when musicians (and it is generally musicians, though there are a few actors etc. who fall into the same camp) are more interested in turning themselves into a brand than being an artist.
That’s a good philosophy to have.

Sorry the truth is tiresome. If you guys would like, I can find another forum where my ideas are tolerated.
Its opinion not truth. I fail to see why its so hard to see the difference. Its fine to have an opinion and to express it, just dont keep repeating it over and over all the time stating it as fact. This feels like im back with paulsbass going over the ahhh’s.

@Expert Textpert We definitely wouldn’t want to lose you. You’re a great contributor to our discussions. Everyone here has to be ready to have their opinions challenged though, and you know I often agree with much you say, but that doesn’t mean I won’t say when I think there’s things you’ve got wrong, or that I disagree with.
I do not believe those Paul chooses to work with are talentless, just that there’s a growing list of those whose talent I do not admire in any way. I often feel like the old fogey looking at modern art and going, “I don’t get it!”. But whether I understand it or not, and it doesn’t matter if I do because a man in his late-40s is not the target audience, people like Kanye and Rihanna are considered leading talents by the people their music is aimed at.
But, when your response to him working with Gaga, is to suggest that John would make better choices, and be working with the type of people Yoko chooses to, expect to be challenged on that because she’s someone Yoko also chooses to work with.

Thanks. You don’t have to look very far on the Internet to see that the majority of fans dislike Paul’s collaborations with Kanye and Ri-what’s-it.
I suppose what bothers me is that Paul is very favored on this message board, and it’s like a free-for-all where people can just criticize John and Yoko whenever they feel like it.
