Since there’s already a thread like this for Paul, I figured I’d make a similar one for John. Hey, it’s only fair that they each get one, right?

Ahhh Girl, Necko, BeatlebugI say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

TheWalrusWasBrian, TimothyI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

He goes missing during the middle section of the album tracklist, which is a minor nitpick, but he nonetheless has a strong overall presence at the beginning and ending sections. He has about the same number of songs as Paul, I think, which is nice.

Mmm. Relatively sober John wrote some damn good songs in India. The White Album is his peak I would say, although Rubber Soul is also a great example of his pure songwriting ability.

I’m giving his solo career a run as well. Here’s my top 20. I could easily make a much longer list, but I’ll keep to the spirit of the thread.
- Isolation
- Imagine
- #9 Dream
- Jealous Guy
- Oh My Love
- You are Here
- Bless You
- Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down And Out)
- Mother
- Love
- God
- Remember
- Nobody Told Me
- Mind Games
- Intuition
- Out The Blue
- Woman
- Watching The Wheels
- I’m Losing You
- Hold On
What a remarkable set of songs. Any artist would love to have these in their catalogue. John has them, as well as everything with The Beatles.

The ‘Hold On is the most underrated Beatles/solo track coalition’ steams on
