THIS is exactly why I leave every Beatles “Expert” Group! This “discussion” has been amusing at times, is a good question, but is more or less an exercise in futility and is purely opinionated! The truth is, it is not a stupid quote in ANY case. It is also possible in every way that he did say it. 1.) It sounds exactly like something he would say! 2.) He absolutely did have a daily relationship with Julia at age five! It would have been just like her, personality-wise, to tell and teach him the goal of life was to be happy. (That was what she and any mother wants for their child!) AND, John was a genius, he was aware of this at a young age, not age five, but ultimately, this quote can neither be proven nor disproven!
Also, just for those “Doubting Thomases” who always want proof, I have a good friend who grew up with John Lennon from childhood, and I will ask him if he ever heard him say this!

They way the quote is phrased, John is recounting the incident later in life. This type of anecdote is just weird for him to be recalling and more or less bragging about.
"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"
-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues
"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"
-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

Why would a childhood friend of John’s have recollection of something that John said to his teacher 72 years ago? Even if they were in the same class and he was right next to them at the time, he still would not remember it. It seems like, not only a pretty mundane thing to remember, but also something outside the grasp of understanding that most five year olds have.

Maybe John was under some Tommy Wiseau influence when he supposedly said it (“do you understand life? do you?”).
I had a Mandela Effect thing with this quote – I could have sworn it was written with the huge pictures of the band in India on the walls of the John Lennon airport in Liverpool, but last time I was there I couldn’t see it anywhere. On topic, if none of the world’s best Beatles experts (my fellow Forumpudlians) can find a proper source, then my best guess would be that he didn’t say it.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

You have a friend who grew up with John? Do tell more, I bet he/she has a wealth of stories.
Even if he did say it though (to which we have no source so where the quote came from is anyones guess) he was most likely exaggerating to make a point.

Yikes, @Danman65 – this is nothing to get hung about.
I don’t know if you are leaving this group after just one post, but not one person here can be tagged as an “expert”. Some of our members may have read more about the group than others, but for the most part, we are all major fans who want or need to know more.
Also, just for those “Doubting Thomases” who always want proof, I have a good friend who grew up with John Lennon from childhood, and I will ask him if he ever heard him say this!
Someone wanting proof is simply someone saying ‘Gimme Some Truth ‘. Even without proof or truth, it’s fun to speculate and try to put clues together. Hell, it’s been proven in books, documentaries, etc…, that even The Beatles themselves can’t remember their own pasts with much certainty – they often contradict each other.
So, welcome to The Forum, settle in and have some fun with the rest of us speculators. Personally, I’d love to hear more about your friend who knew John.

I still see this quote on the net attributed to John…when it’s not from him. In fact, I saw it just now which has prompted this post. There’s ZERO evidence he said this…because he didn’t. It’s a Lennon-y thing to say, but his REAL quotes are better.
