Yeah – even though I don’t believe he said any of it, I could buy into him saying he wanted to be happy when he grew up, especially if Julia always told him that happiness was the key to life (I can buy into that as well as everything I’ve read about her portrays her as a happy-go-lucky person). The part I can not accept is a 5 year old telling anyone “you don’t understand life”. Unless of course, his name was Sheldon Cooper.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

I just saw a T Shirt for sale on facebook with a quote from John which says “Everything will be ok in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end”.
I suspect another one to file under “dubious”.

Actually, he DID say it, but in another lifetime…
My great-grandfather from Bavaria told of a precocious child who lived in the mountains circa 1891-1900. Even at 3 and 4, town-folk would come to him for advice. He often said things well beyond his years. The above quote, along with “There is no time when I’m alone.” “Penguins kick Poe.” “Time wounds all heels.” He was often asked where he acquired his sage-like wisdom. He just smiled, “No one is in my tree!”, which baffled his audience all the more.
Sadly he was killed in a battle in WWI. Later, in the 1960’s, some of the ancient villagers from that little town were brought to tears as a young Englishman echoed the words of their beloved little boy who dwelt among them so long ago. All they could do is turn to each other and say, “Imagine !”

I can’t even work out what’s going on with the hair in that picture. If it was a sticker/decal you’d think it had been accidentally rotated 180°, but it’s actually a mirror image. Perhaps it was just glued on back-to-front and upside-down, which is quite a feat. The facial features are all over the place too.

The whole thing was probably traced and cut out by her or a student. It is just made of like butcher paper or something like that. So she must have stapled the left side on upside down and the right side angled weird. The letters were probably bought at Learning Is Fun or Lakeshore or one of the teaching supplies stored.

@William Shears Campbell How did she respond?
Well she didn’t believe me at first, then I insisted and she started looking it up on her computer. Then this kid that was listening to us and said that he said it when he was in college or at a college or something like that, and I told him that there was no record of him ever saying it. Then the teacher said that she’d look into it, but she asked why it was a big deal that the quote wasn’t real. I told her that I was just trying to make sure her classroom was accurate. Then I had to leave, because the end of lunch bell rang.

I wasn’t sure where to post this, so this thread is probably the best place.
I noticed on that link they traced John’s “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans” to 1957. But I seem to remember a similar line by Robert Browning who’s work John was familiar with.

If I was her student, I would have asked why it was a big deal that I get all the answers right on the next quiz or test. If she can be wrong, why can’t I?

She’s actually not my teacher, I was just in her classroom during lunch, because my friend has her. She’s an English teacher, so maybe she doesn’t care for historical accuracy. There’s a lot of other REAL Lennon quotes that she could use and the fact that she picked that one makes me upset. It’s not even that good of a quote, it’s just popular and it probably showed up in her Facebook feed.

Yeah it really struck me wrong when she said that. I think what she meant was that the quote was a nice quote(even though I don’t think it’s that good of quote but we’re all entitled to our own opinions) and so it doesn’t really matter who said it.(Even though it was a completely fabricated quote and no one actually said it.)
