I still remember coming home for lunch from school and my mum telling me John Lennon had been shot dead. I remember her saying “Probably by gangsters”.

This picture always gives me goosebumps. Taken on the day he died. (view it full size)

You can really see young Beatle John in this pic – like the Hamburg period pics. I find it so hard looking into John’s eyes knowing what was to come.

I remember that the classmate who told me on the way to school on the morning of the 9th saying he was just shot in the street in New York, and my reaction was something like “wow, New York is as bad as they say”, because the city had a high rate of violent crime at the time, and there were lotsa cop show and stuff attesting to that.

(a-hard-days-night-ringo-8It looks like an alternate from the 8 December Leibovitz shoot, @Little Piggy Dragonguy. I don’t quite get what @Ahhh Girl was saying in that post.)

37 years ago, because a journalist’s motorcycle accident saw him in the ER, by this time the horrific news was starting to spread across America, and across the world.

The BBC World Service (which is where I heard it) broke the news to the country of John’s birth at around 4:30am on the 9th.

I was up, being ill, and still remember this clipped BBC voice changing my world forever.

I don’t see any problem, @AppleScruffJunior.

In those days, just as TV used to shut down overnight, so did radio, and pretty much all you could get in the UK at that ungodly hour was the BBC World Service.

So, sitting on the sofa after having thrown up, again, around forty minutes after John’s murder, the BBC picked up the breaking news coming out of America, and among those countries the World Service broke the news was the UK, the country of John’s birth.

You said birth, not death, @Ron Nasty.

Leppo said to look at the picture he posted full size. I did, and I zoomed in and moved the picture around. While zoomed in I “saw” younger John and took screen shots. Both pics are close-ups from Leppo’s picture.

I am referring to the “country of John’s birth” (the UK) being informed of John’s death by the BBC World Service, @Ahhh Girl. I am referring to the location with that phrase rather than the event, as the thread, and surrounding posts, makes the subject clear.

Had I felt it necessary to include reference to John’s death in the post, I would have added “of his death” after “country of John’s birth”. I didn’t think it necessary, though.

Though the way you phrased it did allude to John’s birth, not the country of his birth.

Currently listening to an assortment of Double Fantasy /Milk And Honey tracks this year in remembrance. It’s a sweet thing hearing John sing about enjoying and wanting to go further in his life with Yoko and Sean, but simultaneously gut-wrenching, knowing what would happen just months after he had envisioned these things.
