I always remind myself that the jerk traveled to kill John. He went out of his way to find him. If John lived in London, or Ireland, or wherever, that’s where the jerk was going to go.
Afraid I disagree with that. He had a list of possible targets. One of the reasons he settled on John was location as it didn’t involve him leaving the US – where despite a history of mental illness, he was still able to legally buy a gun (a situation that all these years later America has done little to prevent). Had John lived in London, Ireland, or one of many other countries, the man with the gun would have had problems obtaining a gun, and certainly couldn’t have done so legally; nor does it seem to me that he would have changed his method, and maybe settled for a knife. Too hands on, in my opinion.
As to the use of his name, I use it when necessary, but avoid it whenever possible. Here I see no need to repeat his name, given him that fame he sought, as we all know the name. In less-informed environments though, if someone asks who shot John Lennon , I’m not going to say, “the jerk of all jerks,” as that wouldn’t really answer the question.

Found out yesterday about Robert Morgan, who could’ve taken a photo of John after he was shot. He chose not to and painted a picture instead. I never knew.

According to every report I have ever read, John was shot as he made his way into the West 72nd Street entrance into the Dakota, and managed to make it up the five steps into the security/reception room where he collapsed. No report I have ever seen has John on the ground barely out of the limo.

I’m also someone who calls him “him” or “he” unless the conversation dictates otherwise.
My term is “the a_ _hole in the orange jump suit”.
I can go for that. I also like the nickname he was given in his teens and hated so much, “Nemo”, the Latin word meaning “no man” or “no one”.
How appropriate – Nemo also wears an orange jump suit.
“Nemo’s Big Day”, a vonbontee creation

A journalist reflecting on being in New York that night and covering the story, which includes the first official police briefing on what had happened, which I don’t believe I’ve heard before (apart from maybe a line or two)…

Worst year of my life. I was 20. My dad died Jan 4 and was buried Jan 7, my birthday. I was putting together my band. Based on the Beatles model. Two guitars, bass , drums, three songwriters. I was obsessed with Lennon. I was waiting to be picked up for soundcheck. It was late afternoon Melbourne time. News flash on tele. Doorbell rang. My singer didn’t believe me. We only knew Cold Turkey . The ultimate zombie gig.
Unless Paul McCartney knocks on my door I am unlikely to be impressed.

Also being from Melbourne, I have lots of people who have similar stories… ‘I’d just come home from school, etc’. Sorry to hear about your dad though

All this time since John was killed, and we only continue to ache and feel his absence ever more. To know what we could’ve had but were denied, to see what kind of man John would’ve become as he readjusted to the music scene. How he would’ve reacted to rise of politicians like Reagan, Thatcher, Bush, Blair, and so on. And the stands he would’ve made in restructuring his activism and inevitable return to that field.
It’s also particularly sad and angering to know that Dimebag Darrell of Pantera was also killed on this very same date in 2004, making the date even more tragic and horrific. Time passes on, yet so much remains the same, tragically so.

As with the other few other horrible significant events in life that have happened, I pay no attention to this. I don’t need to remember every year that John was murdered. It troubled me greatly as a kid and it’s never too far away whenever looking at the life he lived or the music he created that plays daily. I don’t watch the documentaries or read the books devoted to it. Listening to the section in ‘The Beatles Anthology Revisited’ was more than I needed for a long time.
Coincidentally, my father was first diagnosed with lung cancer on the 8th December. Which is something.

I wonder what that newsstand guy’s perspective was. Did he know or care about the headline? Did he recognize Paul? Was he oblivious the whole time?
Linda as always a brilliant capturer of moments in time.

I feel the same way now. I mentally note the date but don’t make a big deal of it anymore.

No, just a BS conspiracy theory. John was shot by an arsehole with a history of mental health issues who wasn’t barred from getting a gun. No CIA. No US Government assassination. No MK-ULTRA. Believe the BS to your own detriment. Expect most here to rubbish it for the s***e that it is.

I love what George said about John – that he was just a guy like everybody else, but a slight genius. Not an angel, but he also was.
