I know this is a stupid question, but who the hell decided that going bare naked for Two Virgins was a good idea. I know there was controversy with Yesterday and Today as well, but at least that was just raw meat and baby dolls, whereas this was two adults in the nude promoting an album that is related to The Beatles, who had recently released Yellow Submarine , a movie that’s aimed at 4-10 year olds. Did they not realize how many children liked The Beatles, I mean imagine being 7 at the time and seeing this and the cardboard slip makes it worse because you don’t know what’s under it until after you buy it.
Although you could make a legitimate argument that The Beatles were aiming their music at children at the time, there were also teenagers and adults who would kill to see any Beatle naked and although it’s safe to assume most girls wanted Paul, for a 20 year old Beatles fan, seeing John Lennon naked is like a computer geek having a conversation with Bill Gates and also, If there’s a paper sleeve covering the album, you would have to be pretty stupid to buy it for your 7 year old. In my case, the only reason my mother didn’t buy it was because me and my older brother were 5 and 6 at the time and she didn’t want us to see John’s penis, although she did have friends who bought it and when she did have a listen she thought it was bad music.
The problem I have with this album is that it’s called Two Virgins when in reality, neither of them were virgins. both John and Yoko had children in 1963 and it’s also safe to assume that The Beatles had sex with some of their 16+ fans and on top of that, John had Yoko pregnant at the time.

What else could the title possibly mean then.
It’s like a symbol, they both were “reborn” when they found each other, thus, the Two Virgins title. At least, that’s what I take it to mean.

John fought for its release as there was much resistance to it
John:Two Virgins was a big fight. It was held up for nine months. Joseph Lockwood was a nice, nice guy; but he sat down on a big table at the top of EMI with John and Yoko and told me he will do everything he can to help us, because we explained what it meant and why we were doing it. And he got me to sign him one – he’s got a signed edition of the very first one. Then, when we tried to put it out, he sent a personal note to everybody saying: ‘Don’t print it. Don’t put it out.’ So we couldn’t get the cover printed anywhere.
Actually, the first record that would have been out on Apple would been Two Virgins if they hadn’t help it up. They stalled and they said this, that and the other. Being naive in lots of ways, I had no idea I was going to get slagging from the immediate family. I thought maybe somebody out there will say something, but I was making a statement. It was as good as a song, it was better, you couldn’t say it better – pictures speak louder than words. There it was: beautiful statement.
Further John comments on the album (all quotes from ‘The Beatles Anthology’ book)
We were both a bit embarrassed when we peeled off for the picture, so I took it myself with a delayed-action shutter. The picture was to prove that we are not a couple of demented freaks, that we are not deformed in any way and that our minds are healthy. If we can make society accept these kind of things without offence, without sniggering, then we shall be achieving our purpose.68
What we did purposely is not have a pretty photograph; not have it lighted so as we looked sexy or good. There were a couple of other takes from that session where we looked rather nice, hid the little bits that aren’t that beautiful; we looked good. We used the straightest, most unflattering picture just to show that we were human.74We felt like two virgins because we were in love, just met, and we were trying to make something. And we thought to show everything. People are always looking at people like me, trying to see some secret: ‘What do they do? Do they go to the bathroom? Do they eat?’ So we just said, ‘Here.’

So I was just watching a clip of John and the Plastic Ono Band when they performed at the Sweet Toronto Peace Festival and I noticed that at one point Yoko is holding up pieces of paper so John can read lyrics. This is probably a really silly question, but did John have a bad memory or did he just not really spend much time memorizing?

Most likely the latter. I can’t tell you for sure, but I’m fairly certain that it is the latter!

John, notoriously, had a terrible memory for lyrics – including his own, @GardeningOctopus.
Another instance of him needing the lyrics was during the rooftop concert, when he needs the words to Dig A Pony held up for him – despite the fact that it’s his song, and it being rehearsed/recorded dozens of times in the month preceding.
During recording of the Imagine album at Tittenhurst, which was filmed, John can often be seen using lyric sheets. There’s a wonderful moment, during a version of How, when John drops his lyric sheet while overdubbing vocals, and catches it in time for the next line.
Performing Come Together during the One-to-One concerts at Madison Square Garden, John admits he can’t remember the words.
The reason you’ll often hear John ad-lib in songs, including when performing songs he’d been performing since he was a teenager, was because he couldn’t remember the next line and needed to sing something.

That was one of the first things Paul noticed and liked about John. At the church fete, John was making up lyrics as he went. Either he didn’t know them to start with or he just couldn’t remember them.

Hi everyone! I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this question and it may seem irrelevant but I am wondering who the person is next to John Lennon in this picture:
. Any idea?

This hasn’t been used in 2 months so here’s a boop.
When was the first time John drew his famous ‘self-portrait’ and what was it for (an article, album, etc.)?
My connection with it is through the Imagine documentary but I’m not sure if it’s been around since before that.

The earliest “face” autographs date back to early 1969, just possibly late 1968.
