Okay so I’m listening to John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band (again!), and I think Mother might be my favorite vocal performance of his. Not his best song, not even the best on that album, but something about how simple the lyrics are just make the vocals in this one much more compelling to me than God or Remember. Mother is probably one of the few songs that legitimately makes me want to cry whenever I hear it.So basically, I’m asking what some of your favorite Lennon vocal performances are. Do you guys agree with me? or do you have a different favorite?

Yes indeed, Mother is superb — no other singer I can think of quite masters “raw emotion” like John and that song might be the best example of it.
I can’t think of an especially remarkable favorite right now, but I’m fond of his Mind Games album, and I think his singing throughout that album is quite good. Just one gem is found in the middle of the song “Bring on Lucie (Freeda People)” when he sings the line:
We don’t care what rules you’re playing
We don’t even wanna play your game
You think you’re cool, you don’t know what you’re doing
And 666 is your name
— and the way he enunciates 666 (“sssssssSIX ssssssssssSIX sssssssssssssSIX”) with such juicy verve is amusing…

I don’t think I have a favorite vocal performance. I don’t really judge his vocal performance, I just go by the energy of the song and how it makes me feel. John’s songs have a certain vibe that no other artist has.
I’ve heard Walls And Bridges and Shaved Fish today.

It’s almost as if he is saying “sicks, sicks sicks”. That’s one of the hooks for me on that song.

I couldn’t name my favourite John vocal, as there are so many.
However, thinking about John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band, I love the way the album is bookended with Mother , a pure howl of rage and disappointment about his parents, and the bewilderment and loss of My Mummy’s Dead – an equally powerful vocal in a different way.

You could say that about the Fab Four’s songs as well… and George too. (Now I would say that, wouldn’t I? But it’s twoo, it’s twoo.)

Yeah something about John’s voice is just really appealing to me. I’d even say I prefer his singing over Paul’s most of the time.

Haven’t heard too many of his solo tunes… do Lennon Beatlesongs count? If so, It’d be a tie between Girl and I’m Only Sleeping (yes, I’m Only Sleeping ). there’s just something about his weary, balladish singing in Girl that gets me (those ‘Ahhhs’…), and as for I’m Only Sleeping , he perfectly captures that feeling of ‘Hey, world, go away, I’m still waking up– or not…’
If yer makin me pick solo tunes, I’d probably say Love– his voice vibrates with it.
I’m a sucker for ballads…

Solo Lennon would probably be ‘God ‘, especially after ‘I don’t believe in Beatles’ line. He just sounds so defiant and matter of fact but yet also understanding of those listening who the Beatles meant so much.
‘Bless You’ would also be up there. A real under-rated Lennon track, particularly the Anthology take. John’s vocal is generally better when all the double tracking, echo etc is stripped back.

My favourite is “working class hero”.A lot of singers armed with words as incredible as those would have got all angry and tried to exude “passion”. The listener expects it to explode but it never does,it burns a little at the end before returning to a calm.
John makes the performance more powerful by keeping it restrained but it’s that tension with which he delivers the message that is so amazing. He knew how important that song was and put it before himself. Thinking about it for a moment it’s an extraordinary message for a superstar to try and communicate. It’s a fantastic song.

How can you choose? I’ve been listening to “Starting Over” a lot lately. I get happy chills when it speeds up from the simple chords into the main part of the song. Certain parts of that song almost remind me of Elvis Presley. My other favorites are “God ” and “Mind Games .” There are so many good aphorisms in those. I also like “Working Class Hero ” because of the sheer truth of it.
I welcome the hate I might get from this, but my top favorite of all time is “Imagine .” It’s universally beautiful.

It’s owes much more to Buddy Holly than Elvis to my ears…

From the University of the Almighty Wikipedia:
“He referred to it during production as the “Elvis/Orbison” track, as he “tongue in cheek” impersonated their vocal styles; at the start of the 2010 “Stripped Down”version of the song, Lennon says “this one’s for Gene, and Eddie, and Elvis… and Buddy.””

Oh, I know that @Necko, John said it himself in those last interviews, I just hear more Holly in his vocal. I accept that that’s pretty much just me…

Favourite solo Lennon vocal? That would have to be ‘Beautiful Boy’ – there’s just something about it. A love song from a father to son and there’s real magic in the vocal, not to mention one of his greatest lyrics – ‘Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans’.

@Ron Nasty I haven’t listened to much of Buddy Holly, but I can see how the overall vocal tone sounds similar. The beginning guitar chords and cadences in the chorus made me originally think of Elvis.
