Sorry if it’s already been done but I saw a discussion on another forum about “Good bad vocalists” and shockingly someone suggested John as someone who wassn’t a good vocalist but had a quality to his voice. Of course I disagree. John was an incredible singer. What would you suggest are examples of John’s best vocals? I’ll go for…

These are the first two I would have said as well. And in case you didn’t know, Sexy Sadie is the G.O.A.T song.
Other great performances:
Rock & Roll Music
I Want You (She’s So Heavy)
I’ve Got A Feeling (that relaxing John folk voice is perfect in this song)
Crippled Inside – great expressiveness and character in his phrasing
What You Got
(Just Like) Starting Over
I’m Stepping Out – Vintage John soaring above at some points, yet using that lighter Dylanesque tone as well

What does that mean, SWR?
My favourite John vocals… This Boy , If I Fell (his harmony part is So. Good), Jealous Guy , Sexy Sadie , Money (That’s What I Want) (he shreds that vocal so hard the mic clips), Happiness Is A Warm Gun and I’m So Tired both have incredible dynamics…

GOAT = Greatest Of All Time, @Beatlebug
My top 10 John vox in no particular order:
Oh My Love
#9 Dream
There’s a lot more of course. I almost have his range which is eternally frustrating. I’ve picked the “quieter” John because although his rocker voice is superb, IMHO it’s the floaty yet incisive voice that has the better melodies, transmits the greatest emotion and transitions to falsetto brilliantly.

I agree (also I’m biased ’cause I like ballads) and how could I have forgotten Oh My Love?!

A few favourites for me would be; Ticket To Ride , Help , Imagine and Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) perhaps best of all. His singing is great on that track, as is the harmonising.

I’ve thought about this lately, and Out Of The Blue it came to meeee:
“No Reply .” I just love how John abruptly busts in with the throaty low vocal in the beginning. It sounds unlike any of his other vocal performances to me. The double tracking accentuates its raw yet subdued forcefulness, and I like the control he exerts to not delve into his screamy rock voice until he loses it on “I saw the light!”
Two others come to mind: “Not A Second Time ” and “Sexy Sadie .”

I forgot how amazing his own harmonies are in that song, “doing a Paul”, particularly after the song modulates up and he sings that strong “you uu uu well well now and foreverrrr” part
Not strictly in the vein of “best vocal” but Lennon does this bluesy thing with his melodies (it’s just the way he emotes, really) which is also a kind of signature: he’ll triplet down to a 7th or the root at the end of a line. Down to the root is most common, for instance Yer Blues is full of them. In And Your Bird Can Sing ‘will it bring you do-ow-houn”, the “houn” is a 7th. Once you get that, you’ll see it everywhere in his singing from I Am The Walrus to I Want You (She’s So Heavy), Hey Bulldog and many others. In I Should Have Known Better he does a triplet to root (“to hoo hoo hooiooh hoo”) and then a cheeky 7th drop (“o-oh”). I’m not a natural at harmonic analysis so this took me a long time to figure out what was going on, but it’s always been the sugar on top for me!

I was going to make a post about Mother . The song has been on my mind for a couple of days now. I don’t think there’s a more ‘real’ song than this. I think it’s basically perfect….those shouting vocals. Wow.

Yeah, “Mother ” is great, with lyrics as profound as the blade of a knife. That album has a few other “real emotion” songs, notably “I Found Out ” and “God “. I read somewhere that the screaming vocals toward the end of “Mother ” reflected the “primal scream therapy” he and Yoko were doing at the time. It’s interesting how Paul’s screaming is technically better, but lacks the vulnerable emotion John brings to it.
