Like with almost all the ‘Mind Games ‘ tracks I much prefer the stripped ‘Anthology’ outtake to the commercially released version which I find far too overproduced (something which seems to be a problem John shared with Paul). The ‘Anthology’ version of this is gorgeous (tho not on ‘YouTube’).

The upcoming expanded set has an extended (almost 11 minutes now compared to just over 4 minutes previously) even more stripped back/basic version of the ‘Anthology’ outtake (Take 5). I haven’t heard the actual take (included on the ‘Record Store’ Mind Games EP) only a fan remix and, my goodness, it’s stunning. John’s voice is incredible.

I guess YouTube doesn’t have the Anthology outtake, but they do have an excerpt for over 50 seconds. I prefer over-production myself — not for merely the sake of it, but where it’s called for.  While this song has an aura of being simple and clean, which logically would want to pare down the instrumentation layers, nevertheless what I hear on the original album is very well imagined and executed. I love that “wall of sound” layer of voices (with a Yoko tonality) backing him up. Plus, it’s not like the original went crazy with the production — there are nice little “islands” of relative quiet and simplicity here and there.

Now today I find, you have changed your mind

I have to hear this. Love You Are Here in all formats. One of his best solo songs IMO.

To me the recorded original version is perfection — with one caveat:  I wish those wooden marimbas you hear at the tail end as it fades out were given more time.

I don’t have a problem with the studio You Are Here either. Something like One Day At A Time is way better in Anthology format though.
