Have you guys heard the theory that the song is directed at least in part toward Paul? He does cleverly insert “Here, There, and Everywhere” into one of the verses:
“Why in the world are we here? Surely not to live in pain and fear. Why on earth are you there, when you’re everywhere?”
Some say the “darling” in the lyric is a reference to Paul’s song “Oh, Darling”. And to stretch it a bit further, John also says “fools like me” which could be another reference to a Paul song “Fool on the Hill”.

Not that I fully agree with your theory (interesting and plausible though it is), but it’s mayve worth further noting that John falsely claimed “I told you about The Fool On The Hill …”, when we all know that was actually Paul. (But John also claimed at separate times that both he and Paul were the Walrus, so John’s an unreliable narrator…)

That line has often made me think of Paul, but whether that was John’s intention, who can say?

I think this song was intended to be more universal, almost like Piggies , directed at selfish, rich, self absorbed people in high society, government, and the industry he was a part of. Perhaps he considered Paul a part of that, and his personal feelings informed the song in a few ways, but I have doubts that this a directly targeted toward Paul.

I think you can make most John songs relate to Paul thru linking words to song titles, themes, ideas or pieces of lyrics. People are willing to look far too hard for connections which they then make into theories which are almost presented as fact.

It could be directed toward John Lennon himself

I don’t think it’s a dig at Paul, and the thought has never entered my mind at all until this conversation.

Question for y’all: Does anyone else think the drums on this song sound like bongos? I am not suggesting that they necessarily were physical bongos, perhaps just that the drums sound as if they were.
I never thought of that. I have a background in Latin percussion and know bongos well, but I’ve also heard many songs over the years that use very tight sounding tom-toms on the drumset, and I always just assumed that’s what Lennon used.
I’d say they sort of sound bongo-ish.

They maybe sound a bit bongo-ish at points, yeah, especially during those big elaborate fills. I think Sea Belt is right about Alan White playing on super-tight toms (I am not a drummer), and the ton of echo that Spector added making them sound really extra unusual.
I think Phil was one of the most overpraised producers in history (aside from being a despicable human), but he always captured huge, booming drum sounds (or his engineers did), that’s something he was great at.

Thr drums are really heavily processed, and is apparently pretty influential. I think they’re a little darker than I would like but they sound good on the song. Lots has been written about the drums on this song, here’s an interesting link I found on them.
