Beautiful and sad song. I love the “Life can be long and you’ve got to be so strong” section. Such a great melody. So sure of itself, and really quite touching. Some of the best music available to be heard right there.

The best part is ‘sometimes I feel I’ve had enough’. How universal is that feeling?
The song connects with all of us at some point during our lives. And it also gives us the strength to keep going despite those feelings.
John covered a lot of ground in his early days and he did it really well (I’m referring to his Beatles career, Plastic Ono Band and Imagine ). I think he basically said a lot of what he wanted to say in those albums, and definitively, especially with Plastic Ono and Imagine . As he sung in Sexy Sadie , he laid it down for all to see. If people think he was ‘going through the motions’ somewhat after that time, I can understand why from his perspective.

I’ve gotten so used to the marvelous take 40 from the Box Set that I can’t even hear the album version anymore. He goes down the octave on “you’ve got to be so strong,” and it just isn’t as good.

This is another great soul searching John song. I like how he starts out singing the iconic first line but then sounds like he loses his confidence a bit. It perfectly suits the point he is making.

Timothy, Beatlebug, StrawberryFields91I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I’ve always loved this song. The lyrics are so true and sad and beautiful, and I love the way John sings it. Also, it’s the only song on Imagine that could possibly go after How Do You Sleep.
