Allow me to settle this. Paul McCartney is a better songwriter than John was.

Well, John figured it out, and Paul did say that it was about him. So, Paul did his fair share of knife twisting as well.
Yes, but Paul dud all his knife twisting sprinkled with sugar so that makes it better

And yes, I don’t really see why someone has to put John down to praise Paul and vice-versa.
Well said, Peppy. I don’t see why either, because it is possible to praise John with no mention of Paul. If somebody wants to just put Paul down then they should start a “Paul McCartney Un-Appreciation Thread” (which actually sounds like a really fun idea, we should have that for all of them).

There is enough negativity in the world as it is. We don’t need any more, even if it’s just in jest.
Positive vibes, y’all

Now that I’m embroiled into this, Lennon had War Is Over, Give Peace A Chance , Imagine , and Instant Karma . Paul had Live And Let Die , which is not even in the top 5 James Bond songs.
For a start ‘Here Today ‘ is as good as anything John wrote.
Instead of writing nonsense why not go and actually listen to Pauls solo career without any preconceived ideas that it is far inferior to Johns?

From listening to Lennon’s music it sounds like its full of angst and hatred.
Bless You, Oh My Love, Love, Watching The Wheels , I Know (I Know), One Day (At A Time), Whatever Gets You Thru The Night , Oh Yoko, Dear Yoko, Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy). None of the above fit into either category.
As for whoever wrote that most of Paul’s work is sappy pop go and rummage around and you’ll find thats nothing more than commonly spouted garbage that fails to hold up after 16 seconds of analysis.

Paul’s attacks were every bit as bad as John’s its just that whilst John would take out a sword and stab you in the gut Paul would stick Piranhas in your pool and wait till you went for a swim.

Not sure if all these things can be applied to Paul. Yes, Paul has shown himself capable of all these things, with songs like “Hey Jude “, “Helter Skelter ” and “Eleanor Rigby “, but like 70% of his songs have been safe pop songs. Whereas Lennon strove to make almost all of his songs unique.

In songwriting, you have to look at multiple aspects. Simply put:
1. The writing.
2. The music: notes, vocals, and chords
3. Genre.
4. Personal taste.
John’s writing is avant-garde–we can all agree on that. Even in his simpler songs, he’s ahead of his time. I like John’s style of writing because I can identify with it. There’s a lot of randomness in it and it’s more prose/imagery than story-telling. To John, that tells the story. It’s a lot of blunt honesty. This is what I prefer. I like to think that Paul is more of a storyteller and realist that grounds John. Without Paul’s writing, John’s would be more hodgepodge. However, I definitely prefer John’s solo career over Paul’s. However, I’m completely against the argument of upping or putting down Paul in order to exaggerate John’s merit.
John knew a lot of basic chords, but nothing more. He is a master of creating complex melodies above them–lots of accidentals. It’s skillfully done and not something a nonprofessional should know much about. But John does. Technically speaking, both Paul and George beat him with the chords and instrumentation. There are many songs like “Don’t Let Me Down ” and practically all of John’s solo songs having someone else make the instrumental arrangements. John only knew simple chords on piano and didn’t know how to create arrangements because let’s face it, he couldn’t do it. These certainly make the songs more interesting. However, as I’ve said a thousand times, I’m professionally trained but I value simple chords and introspective lyrics over musical ability because there is something personal and talented about writing something you care about that’s made from scratch. It’s hard for professional musicians to “create” anything original like what the Beatles did. As for vocals, John really managed to do well without reaching the high notes Paul did. <–Is rock defined by the notes you hit? That should be a debate. I love high notes, but I like what John did better.
For the genre, well … it’s sort of based off of him. John made rock what it is or at least rock n’ roll. But he also followed the rules–it’s clear he valued chromatic scales and good rhythm. He’s also shown to tamper in other genres but always keeping that wonderful mix.
Your taste is your own. I think he’s the best–quality and quantity, they say. But there’s Paul, too–and a lot of other competing artists. It depends what you like. With music, whoever makes you feel the most is the best.

The image gave me a chuckle. And yes, ’tis very apt.
So what would George do? Write a memoir and leave you out of it?

Ye haven’t been here long, @Evangeline, but you’ll soon see that despite his moniker, our @meanmistermustard isn’t truly mean. A bit short, perhaps, and doesn’t hesitate to express his opinion in no uncertain terms, but he’s never grumpy without just cause.

Paul McCartney was pop a bunch of the time, that doesn’t make it sappy or bad.
