(Please sorry if I refer to this album as Somewhere in New York. I confuse these 2 words.. a lot)

Edit : Argh it’s Sometime in New York City. Sorry. a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

Ok Sun King , these are my first impression of this album. It's not by any means a professional review. I was paying a bit of attention to the lyrics because I was working in some school stuff while listening to this.

Woman is the N—r of the world. – Fantastic music and great lyrics. One of my favorite from the album.

Sisters, sisters – I'm sorry but Yoko's voice is a bit monotonous and that kills the song.

Attica State – The music is good and John and Yoko's voice combined sound ok. The chorus reminded
me of the famous scene in Dog Day's afternoon “Attica! Attica!”.

Born in a Prison – The music is ok, Yoko's vocals are a bit better. I mean, she didn't have a great singing voice but
I think , she could have done something to improve it, I dunno, some singing classes…

New York City – Great rock and roll song. I like it.

Sunday Bloody Sunday – I love Larry Mullen Jr drums … oh wait wrong song. a-hard-days-night-george-10. I really like it. The music is fantastic
and I'm not ashamed to confess I totally dig Yoko's chorus in here, it's really catchy. I wonder if U2 got inspiration in the drums from this song. I found myself moving my head at the rythm. And that false ending. Definetly a keeper.

The Luck of the Irish – It's ok. Again, Yoko's voice could have been better. I paid a bit attention to the lyrics and…
no. I don't like Preaching John.

John Sinclair – I like the beginning. But those repetitions… if I had listened in a vinyl it would have made me run to the
stereo and check if the album was scratched.

Angela – No. I didn't like it. The music is good I guess, but I got a bit tired of being in a political protest. I dunno
but I started to feel  I was listening to Bono or Trova Cubana during their political rants. Not good.

We're all water – At this point I was looking forward to start listening Mind Games . (The next album in Signature Box)

Overall I think the album is ok, but a bit too preachy. My favorites are Woman , New York City and Sunday Bloody Sunday.  What do you think of it?

(And BTW Joe, I was reading BB John Lennon 's section while listening to the albums. Fantastic!)

Because of my little instant love for Sometime in NYC, I didn't even bother. I'll have a bash later, when I'm done with all the albums. right now I'm with Rock and Roll. I totally dig it

Oh, I love that one. Especially the Spector ones, which I am surprised by. Currently on You Can't Catch Me.

You can fix that now, you have the power! a-hard-days-night-john-5 I fixed it for you, but if you click the little wrench by the title, you can change it, lock it, move it, etc. (Same goes for individual posts. Use it wisely!)

Now I know what to start with on iTunes. Thanks. apple01

Well, I thoroughly hate Yoko’s voice. It ruins some of the songs for me.

Actually the only song I could stand her voice was Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Still, John's songs are not the best.

Title still isn't right- it is Some Time In New York City , not Sometime. a-hard-days-night-paul-11

I used to really like this album, but I've gone off it. I still like We're All Water and Woman Is The N—r Of The World. I used to really like the two songs about Ireland, but John is far too kind to the Real IRA in Sunday Bloody Sunday, and whilst John's parts in The Luck Of The Irish are really good, Yoko's are awful. I can listen to John Sinclair and Angela, but they're far from my favourite John songs.

I told her I didn’t

Topic title has been corrected – Some Time in Los Ang… Oh Crap.

*edit, edit, type, type*

There – done and done.

I agree with a lot of what you said, mith.

IMO, The Elephant's Memory Band did a nice job of backing. For those who don't know, they backed John during the Live In New York City concert vid as well.

I can see why the album was largley panned, but it does have its moments.

Mith, when are you going to learn to read the manual (or Skye’s messages) before using software?? I found where to edit the title. *facepalm*

I haven’t paid too much attention to the lyrics in Sunday Bloody Sunday (Isn’t that like “I can’t believe the news today”) but the rhythm is catchy. I can’t hear it without shaking my head and clapping my fingers. And I dunno why, but Yoko’s screeching Suuundaaaay Bloooody Sundaaaaaaaay is just perfect with John “uh-uh-uh” in the back. I laugh at the madness going on there. two-virgins

And yes Zig, the band is quite good.

Well, it rocks. But it's got some of those avant-gardisms (Yoko doing her “thing”) that you either love (unlikely) or hate (probably!) Also, I'm inclined to rate it a bit higher than most since I'm a big Frank Zappa/Mothers fan. Apparently Zappa was annoyed that his composition “King Kong” (which he'd already recorded a couple of times since 1969) was arbitrarily retitled “Jamrag” and credited to John & Yoko alone!

The non-Mothers side consists of “Cold Turkey ” and a long (16 minutes!) version of “Don't Worry Kyoko”, both of which are better heard in their original studio versions. Yoko's caterwauling on the latter really is a bit much. (And you know I've usually got a fairly high tolerance for her shtick!) But I do think that her performance of “We're All Water” (on the studio album) is her first great “singing” performance of a “rock song”. (In other words, she gave great performances on Plastic Ono Band and Fly, but very little of it was “singing” and there weren't really any “songs”, mostly just extended freak-outs.)

(But, hey: If you're just downloading the albums for free, there's no point in complaining about the parts you hate & can simply delete, is there? It's not as though you had to pay double-album price for a single listenable album! Or even HALF a listenable album, for that matter. And it's even more of a non-issue considering that Some Time in NYC was sold for the price of a single album, just like All Things Must Pass was 3-for-the-price-of-2. And, surprisingly enough, considering Apple's stinginess, the STinNYC double-CD appears to also be selling for the price of a single, judging from the one I got at HMV, $17.99 like all the other Lennon albums.)

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Now that makes a LOT of sense!!! I'm going to give it a try to the Live Jam disc. I'm afraid I'll hate it because I don't ike extended versions of songs in concerts (unless you're creative) a-hard-days-night-paul-10

Well, I listened to it on my 40 minute commute this morning, and found it completely acceptable, and certainly more accessible then I figured. Yoko was, shall I say, certainly, I guess, better then expected. But I had 0 expectations, so….

All in all a fine record, but clearly his worst. And I quite enjoyed Lennon's of Well.

Well Lennon was in full political swing here with Yoko by his side in the Greenwich Village left-wing community scene. It certianly gave them plenty of inspiration to write some songs but the quality was hardly up to Imagine or Plastic Ono Band standards.

They teamed up with the ramshackle Elephants Memory but again they were hardly a quality band, even though Lennon admired their 'rawness' (see Quarrymen / Hamburg Beatles) which was something he was always pining for.

It was a solid John/Yoko fusion and their heart was truly in it, but that's about as far as it goes. The 'live jam' stuff is perhaps worth listening to once but that's it.

Best tracks: New York City, Woman is the N—r of the World.

That's my opinion anyway!

Just curious how people feel about this one after so many years?

As noted in other posts I sold my LPs long long ago and for some unknown reason (life running on while I was busy making other plans I guess) I have just begun to replace the most important ones – my Beatles stuff.

Long story short, I always liked Sometime back then, and so have just bought the remastered 2CD set, along with the 4 CD box set of Lennon (Gimme Some Truth ), Plastic Ono Band, and Imagine .

The first thing I liked about the album was the sound, both musically and vocally.  Ah, the lyrics – well, at least they are better than the pained yells at the end of Cold Turkey :)    I even liked the ‘bonus’ LP – I felt like I had one of their experimental LPs with a little more musicality to it.

I always thought ‘New York City’ would have made a great single, but suppose that this album was about the message and they didn’t want to dilute that by focussing on a catchy single?

Not once I ever go to, has never appealed. I find the lyrics weak and at times embarrassing and the musicianship uninspiring. New York City is probably the better of Johns efforts however I prefer the live versions of that, and Woman is The N—r of the World, recorded at MSG due to better Lennon vocals (if only we could get a remastered remix of that). And like Double Fantasy and Milk And Honey I can’t get into Yoko’s vocals so its skipped.

If I’m in the mood for John, I don’t reach for this one. However, on those occasions when it comes up in my playlist of all of his albums back-to-back, I find some really cool moments in a lot of the songs – just not all of them.

I may be in the minority when I say I like the style of music played by Elephant’s Memory. Street bands fascinate me with their energy and each member’s ability to play freestyle solos that weave in and out of the central beat of the rhythm section. Très cool.

Not all of Yoko’s contributions are unlistenable. The lyrics in ‘We’re All Water’ are very clever.yoko-ono_01 She loses me when she wails at the end, but that’s just my taste.

Not a bad album, really.

It’s his worst album, IMO, but New York City, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Luck of the Irish I all like very much (apart from Yoko’s vocals)

These are the only ones I like too, but I like Yoko’s vocals on Sunday Bloody Sunday.
