Mhh I haven’t listened to all Sun King , but to be honest, I don’t like it. It’s… weird. I dunno how to describe it. I just don’t like it.a-hard-days-night-ringo-7

BTW I was going to search a topic about this album to post my opinion but you saved me that job by posting this… a-hard-days-night-paul-11

No problem. I didn’t really like this either, but STINYC isn’t much better. They are both bad albums.

Ehh…I have to disagree, Sun King . I must say, I personally like Mind Games better. I don't really care about the theme of the albums. STiNYC is just too political for me to really get into, though I do like Luck of the Irish. I just have a soft spot for Mind Games because it has my favorite John solo song “I Know (I Know)”. Well, one of my favorites. I love to listen to it back to back with Some People Never Know off of Wings Wild Life . They fit together well, to me. Seems like a call and answer type thing…though that could just be my imagination. It has been known to run away with me sometimes.

I don't like the song Mind Games …and Out the Blue is one of those chilling songs. I really like it, though I have to say I like Walls And Bridges a lot better!

I agree wholeheartedly on WAB being better. Regarding I Know (I Know), while it does nothing for me personally, Joe did mention Some People Never Know in his article. So you’re aren’t crazy (in that regard.)

Never been able to get into Mind Games , far too over produced. The songs as presented on the Anthology boxset show what great songs they were but all that oohing and ahhing in the background completely ruin the enjoyment as do the overpruduced arrangements. Nowhere near as bad as STINYC (appropriately nearly an anagram of STINKY which is what is) tho, i never listen to that.

Johns on record as saying he made music during this period because thats who he felt he was, John the musician. To me he put them out comericial because he felt he had to but wasnt that interested in the music. His interest returned in Double Fantasy and he did find some enjoyment doing the Rock 'n' Roll album, despite all the chaos with Mr Spector.

I hope one day Yoko will move away from the endless reissues and remasters and get around to going back into the archives as i would like to hear full albums of alternate basic versions of Mind Games and Walls And Bridges . Not in the way of DFSB but the basic takes. The Alternate series. Im not holding my breath tho.

I really dislike Walls And Bridges except for #9 Dream, which is excellent.

Contrastingly, Mind Games is my favourite Lennon album (though only because Imagine has I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier), and probably my favourite Beatles solo album, sorry ATMP . Mind Games itself is a pretty darn fantastic track, then there's songs like Tight A$ and Meat City which are real rockers backed up with emotional songs like I Know (I Know), Out the Blue and You Are Here, and Only People and Bring on the Lucie/Freda People. I think of it as Imagine Volume 2, but the weakest track is about a hundred times shorter than Imagine 's weakest.

I told her I didn’t

What is the song ‘Mind Games ‘ actually about? This might seem like a bit of a stupid question as the lyrics aren’t necessarily difficult to understand but…I don’t really understand them. Is he saying that he and Yoko play mind games with each other? Or does it have a more political meaning, like, everyone is playing games with each other, not being straight, etc.?

It’s more forgiving than that. My sense is that Lennon is saying that we all play mind games of one sort or another, and that’s okay; it’s not a lost cause, we can use those “games” for good.

Agreed with Funny Paper – it’s a sort of “we can all tap into that secret force to make the world better” message, rather like All You Need Is Love .

I’m also reminded of his slightly later “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” — a more open-minded, less dogmatically self-righteous Lennon.

I find Mind Games to be his worst solo album (apart from Sometime in NYC)…boring, plodding, and tuneless, although there are a few good tracks on it. I’m not a fan of John’s wacko political period of ’72-’74 (although I love Walls And Bridges ).
