Yes, I think the melody/delivery is more poignant than the lyric there. I feel like ‘God is a concept with which we weather our pain’ might have been more accurate. My personal favourites from this album are Love and Look At Me because I like John’s ballads.
Yes, Love is AMAZING. One of the best John songs of all time in my humble opinion.
Love one another.

The melody is incredible. I’d tolorate much worse lyrics and still love the song. “I just believe in me, Yoko and Me” is the best line
Any lyric with Yoko in it is usually pretty good.

John’s Plastic Ono Band album is the most overrated album in his catalogue. Mostly just whiny lyrics and angst. A few good songs, but I’ve never been able to really relate to it. Maybe because I’ve never gone through a period where I hated God and my parents were never divorced.

On a related note, the themes that John explores in this album are ones that Yoko got to know very well through their therapy sessions. May Pang seems to say in her book Loving John that Yoko used this knowledge of John’s psyche to influence him to return to her because she was a strong “mother” figure and understood his weaknesses and fears. Of course, Pang, wanting to be his sole lover, interprets Yoko’s influence as being somewhat malicious.
Personally, I say “more Power to Yoko” here. Yoko was hurt by John when he had sex with another woman basically in front of her at a party when he was drunk. People seem to miss this when they bring up later instances of Yoko having affairs. Yoko never did anything John didn’t do.

Isolation is a standout as well. A perfect song listen to when you’re feeling down. It begins so gentle, and almost pitiful, before going into some of John’s most grungey and emotionally tormented vocals.
It’s my favourite solo career Lennon song. I love it for the reasons you describe. It has tenderness and raw power. I love the concept of a man sitting down, playing the piano and singing about his troubles.
I posted this on another thread and thought of repeating it here:
Quoting myself:
“I just remember the best song to listen in these times of quarantine if none of you have already.
[Isolation by John Lennon ]
It instantly clicked with me, how relevant it is. I was listening to music on my phone, feeling melancholic when this song popped up. I already love this song in the first place, probably my favourite solo Lennon song (yeah I said it) and certainly the best on John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band on my humble opinion. And that is a tight album.
The lyrics are just insane relatable rn, even if it wasn’t the original topic that Lennon seems to be focusing on (I’m guessing depression).“
Quoting @vonbontee :
“It’s so quiet! Very vulnerable track, just a little boy and girl afraid of the sun, or anything else that may hurt. So hard to listen to an artist this miserable, and that’s why it’s so compelling.“
The comments of the YouTube video are filled with jokes about coronavirus. Anyone else blasting Isolation while in quarantine?

John remains so relevant because his true subject was himself, and we find ourselves feeling what he did at various times in his life. I personally take solace in knowing he had already been there mentally, feeling pain and being able to push through it. From I’m So Tired to I’m Stepping Out, he continued to make music from seemingly banal day to day thoughts and experiences, which strengthened the connection listeners felt.

I’ve never really gone through that either, I just love the raw emotion in the music. It’s a very powerful album.

From the Daily Beatles
According to a sparse new posting on the official website PlasticOnoBand.com, a new audio set containing 159 tracks will be announced publicly in January. So it looks like all the 50th anniversaries will be pushed back to 2021, except for the half speed mastered «McCartney» and the «My Sweet Lord » single.
Meanwhile, the Plastic Ono Band book has hit the shops, so you can put that on your Christmas wish list.

All these years later, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of this album is my last Christmas at home in 1970. I had received both All Things Must Pass and Plastic Ono for Christmas and spent most of the morning just watching my family from the corner and listening with headphones on. My mom took my picture and when I see it now I remember (so distinctly) that Working Class Hero was playing in me head at the time…
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool
Till you’re so f*****g crazy you can’t follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
It’s hard for me to believe that I was ever this alienated. In retrospect, this was the last Christmas my parents were together and I should have been celebrating family and acknowledging what had been a safe and fun childhood. I guess in a way, my ultimate journey to a fulfilling domestic life parallels Johns.
