I’ve read somewhere–I believe it was a memoir by a member of the Beatles circle, or a friend of John’s–that he said (in jest I suppose) that he wanted to slip LSD into the Queen’s tea when he went to get his MBE in 1965. I love this detail, but haven’t been able to remember the source, or track it down. Does it ring a bell for anyone?

Offline According to Peter Brown’s book ‘The Love You Make’, John Lennon had a joint hidden in his boot to present to Prince Charles in case they’d run into him, but Charles wasn’t around on that day. This “slipping LSD to the Queen” likely stemmed from this story for this is the first time that I’d ever heard it. I mean really, “slipping LSD to the Queen”?! I don’t even think that John & George had tripped themselves just yet, and if they had of before meeting the Queen, I would think that they’d be more interested in turning Paul & Ringo on to it first, I call B.S. on this one…:-)

Ringo had already had it by that time. They got their MBEs in October, and Ringo had it in August.

That sounds like John was being interviewed for the zillionth time, and he decided to spice it up with a typically irreverent “naughty schoolboy” comment; just to see if the interviewer would take him seriously. I know for a fact that Paul thought that the queen was a “pretty nice gal;” and he would have told her that he loved her a lot, if he had a bellyful of wine. That’s on the record.

He was evidently plotting it since that Spring. Or perhaps even earlier, if he had, in fact, written Larry Williams with his nefarious plot, which served as inspiration (the chaotic sound representing the Queen in the deep throes of a psychedelic experience). Considering that LSD was confined mostly to laboratories at the time, it really goes to show just how trendsetting the lads were.
Of course, this would’ve also been around the same time that the first of several Paul McCartneys were killed and replaced, but that’s neither here nor there…
