It’d be nice for Paul’s next album, I think that would be great for promotion too – but it seems about time for this to come out. How do you think the song should be finished?
Written by: Lennon
Recorded: 1979; 20, 21 March 1995
Producer: Jeff LynneUnreleased
Based on a 1970s demo by John Lennon, Now And Then was briefly considered for release on Anthology 3 but later rejected.
Also known as I Don’t Want To Lose You and Miss You, Now And Then was recorded by Lennon at his home at the Dakota Building in New York City.
In January 1994 Yoko Ono gave Paul McCartney two cassettes of John Lennon ‘s home recordings, which included a number of incomplete and previously unreleased songs. They included Free As A Bird, Real Love, Grow Old With Me and Now And Then .
On 20 and 21 March 1995 the three surviving former Beatles began constructing a backing track to be added to Lennon’s demo of Now And Then . However, during the second day work on the song ended.
According to McCartney, George Harrison “didn’t want to do it,” possibly because the song needed to be extensively rewritten before it could be released. Another factor was a humming sound on Lennon’s demo which proved hard to mask.
It was one day – one afternoon, really – messing with it. The song had a chorus but is almost totally lacking in verses. We did the backing track, a rough go that we really didn’t finish.Jeff LynneNow And Then had been considered as a third reunion single. It was replaced on Anthology 3 by the orchestral track A Beginning, recorded in 1968 as an unused introduction for Don’t Pass Me By.
Since 2006 there has been speculation that McCartney intends to complete the song, as a Lennon-McCartney composition, with new verses and a drum track recorded by Ringo Starr.

All for Love is a rumoured new composition believed to have been recorded by Paul, George and Ringo in March 1995.

It was a song that Paul and George wrote together during the ’95 Anthology sessions. Unlike the other songs, John Lennon wasn’t going to featured on it.

I think there done doing that as George didn’t want anything to do with it, pretty well banishing the idea. Would Paul do it solo? Anything’s possible I guess! Would Ringo be on drums??

It’s a really beautiful song…some of those chord changes send shivers down the spine. I hope Paul and Ringo finish it off. Even though he’s not with us any more, they shouldn’t let the perpetually grumpy and bitter George derail this any longer. It was a massive disappointment (and a misfire on their part) to not have a third new song to open Anthology 3 . They can rectify it now.

I like the song, and I’d love to see it released one way or another. If John’s demo isn’t useable, then perhaps a whole new recording could be made, crediting John as the writer. Either way, I’d love to find out what the Threetles had in mind for it, if only to debunk those so-called ‘official’ versions out there, which are just badly made mixes by fans.

The best sounding version of John’s untouched demo I’ve heard has none of the hum running through it that supposedly caused Jeff Lynne and the Threetles such consternation in 1995. They should be able to apply the overdubs they did to the inferior demo version to this new one and then finish it off, especially with the recording technology being leaps and bounds more advanced when compared to what they were using 20 years ago. Will it ever happen, though? Who knows?

We know for a fact that Paul wants to release it – or, has been wanting to in any case. I doubt he will without Yoko and Olivia’s blessing, though. Ringo probably won’t object.

I saw an interview that looked relatively recent (maybe within the last 10 years) where Paul says he would like to go ahead and finish it up
This is a fan version but it sounds like really great and as far as the video goes it could be a great blueprint for them to put it out

Do I think it will be released?
Yes, Apple at some time will put it out.
Will it be soon?
I dont think so. I can see it being held up for a good while as I doubt Olivia will want to go against George’s wishes at the time.
Do I want to see it released?
Not particularly. A demo that one of the artists involved in the overdubbed recorded decided not to do doesn’t get my interests going.
I will be in the large minority when I type this but we had the Beatles reunion 21 years ago, can’t folk move on? For 10 years it was for the four Beatles to get together. After John’s murder it moved to Julian taking John’s place, thankfully it never happened. Eventually the three surviving Beatles worked on a few demos of John’s and the dreamed of reunion happened and it worked – to a point. We now have folk asking for a half-finished demo that one of the three gave up on, even to the point of Paul and Ringo going back and trying to recreate some of that magic from 50 years ago for another one last moment. Even the idea of Paul and Ringo thinking of doing that smacks of scrapping the barrel. The Beatles legacy is immense, the recordings we have are every bit as good now as they were back when they were released (‘FAAB’ and ‘RL’ in my opinion are even better thanks to the ‘1+’ remixes); why keep diluting it to the point where we will end up with something that reeks of little more than one last desperate grasp of what once was but should have been left alone long before.
I totally get where John was coming from in 1980 when he said
“Why should the Beatles give more? Didn’t they give everything on God ‘s earth for ten years? Didn’t they give themselves? You’re like the typical sort of love-hate fan who says, ‘Thank you for everything you did for us in the Sixties… would you just give me another shot? Just one more miracle?'”
and everything else on a reunion. It will always be one more, one more inkling of a recording that Paul could work on so to finish or Ringo could handclap to or George could be added to doing harmonies or John could hiccup on or whatever.
The Beatles as an active band are gone, two are dead. Enjoy what they left us and be thankful.

It is beautiful song, one of John’s best love songs, I think Apple Jam already performed it last year, it was quite good but still rather unfinished. You can listen it on Youtube:

Very true point. I think most fans who want this are the younger ones who unfortunately missed the bandwagon completely. It is hard for some people to understand (including myself) that you can never recreate their original magic.
There are always going to be ones who miss out unless every decade or two Apple and family members of long gone Beatles drag out a shitty recording or studio riff and manipulate it until we get something that is, in the very loosest term, a “Beatles” track. There comes a time in life when you have to accept the Beatles are no more and move on. Hoping for Paul and Ringo to somehow work on a Lennon demo that George didn’t deem worthy to finish and expect it to be in any way as good as what they produced in the 60’s or even 90’s is futile. If the response is why does it need to be as good as the 60’s then why bother to do it at all? Just to say “I got my Beatles reunion”?

I’d love to see Now And Then released, but I’d rather see Carnival Of Light , because NAT would be a splicing together of old stuff and COL is an original Beatles recording. (Plus, I kinda like Avant Garde stuff…)

I wouldn’t consider it a Beatles reunion, to be honest I don’t really like that phrase . . just a posthumously released song. Being an avid fan of Tupac I practically fetishize unreleased songs but with that aside . . I do feel like this is a really great track. The chords, the lyrics are simple but simple enough to represent a feeling that everyone can identify with universally

I also perfectly understand what he meant in that quote and I really don’t think it has to be considered a reunion though, just a posthumously released song that needs some additional production – it wasn’t written while he was with The Beatles so it could just be a John Lennon solo track with some additional production by Paul and another producer
I would just like to see the track put out to it’s full potential
This video features the interview where Paul mentions it. I think Paul and Jeff Lynne could get it done quite nicely, Yoko did give it to Paul for that reason
