As per the title…
What do you think?
I just look at all we know about his life…his intense personal friendship with Stuart, drugs, his all consuming relationship with Yoko etc. I just hear him in an interview saying he wanted to grow old ‘with Yoko only.’ It seems so exclusive of everything and everyone else around him. We all know couples have intense feelings for each other but he did seem to crave her at the exclusion of everything else.
Was it more to do with an addictive personality or manipulation from a partner?

Welcome, @merrymunky.
An interesting thought which has some validity, but not something I feel quite captures the nature of John’s personality.
John’s personality, to my mind, was more rolling obsessive than addictive. He spent much of his life searching for the missing piece of his jigsaw puzzle, for something to fill the hole the losses and absences of his youth had left him with.
With addiction, that is often a hole people get stuck in that they would escape if they could, while the rolling obsessive is always looking over the horizon for the next thing to believe in. Something that is often said about John, including by him himself at times, was that he was always looking for the next guru.
He would find a guru, a new belief, dive into it two hundred percent, and then desert it when, either, he found it didn’t offer what he sought, or he found something new that diverted his attention.
That is an obsessive personality, not addictive; though each obsession can look like an addiction because of the individuals total immersion in at the time.
It was an aspect of John’s character long before he met Yoko, and had he lived – whether his relationship with Yoko survived or not – it would likely have continued to be so.
Myself, I don’t see anything strange about him saying he wanted to grow old with Yoko. Most people in relationships would hope their partner had a similar view of a future together.
You may find this thread interesting as it also discusses the nature of John’s personality and his drives.

Thanks for the response @Ron Nasty It’s a great response and one I am inclined to agree with actually. Maybe addictive was the wrong term to use. Definitely obsessive though! Such a complex fella he was.
We can definitely see the tendencies there even in the early days.
Oh believe me I am married and hope that I get to grow old with my lovely man. I think the ‘with only…’ comment that seemed very isolating of everything and everyone else around him. Like he would just become some Mrs Havisham type character one day, fading away in an old house if he should be left behind in life.

The afformentioned Rolling obsession always came through in his music and lyrics. The drugs, the spirituality, the politics, his crazed love, Janov’s scream threrapy, and he even closes out his career with music about his final obsession: his family.
Great post @Ron Nasty I enjoyed the read.

When I saw the thread title before reading the first post, I thought the thread would be about John having people get addicted to him because of his personality. My answer was “Yes” because he was the gang leader/driving force even when his age was in the single digits.

Just had a Beatles Bible moment!
I just turned page 918 of Tune In, and what do I read?
“They were also dressed to shock and smuggling a load of Preludin, stuffed here and there…They wer risking problems at customs in both Holland and England, but John — with his addictive, compulsive personality and zest for talking — wasn’t the kind to full down drugs by the handful for three months and then simply stop.”
