Hey, folks. I’ve been lurking for a while and for some reason this topic caught my eye. Aside from the subject being a little, I dunno, strange to elicit so much commentary (not to mention a bit of rancor…well there, I did mention it), my second reaction was to put myself in the shoes of someone who stumbles across this and says to his/her mate,
“Damn, honey, look at this! Sixteen pages of speculation by complete strangers over whether or not you love me. WHAT???!!!”
My own 2 cents — every picture I’ve seen of John and Yoko together has shown them looking so “clingy” that’s it is hard for me to imagine that they did not love each other.
Well there, now I’m speculating too! Ain’t the internet great?
Hope y’all are doing just fine!

Thanks! I started posting a couple of years ago, I think, and then faded back to lurker status. So it’s been a while! I love this site, love the insight, I had just hit a “posting” wall between this and a few other places, and stepped away for a while. So dipping my toe back in…

BluemeanAl’s post got me thinking. I wonder what it would be like for Sean to read this thread.
Mom went after Paul first. Really? My last name could be McCartney?

Also, how would Julian react/ what would his opinion be?
Who knows, what if someone on this forum is Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr in disguise? My bet is @Ahhh Girl.

That is so funny, because I was thinking the same exact thing when I read @Mademoiselle Kitty >^..^<‘s post on the subject. The comfort she displays with idiomatic English (or Americanish) and her facility of expression is really remarkable. But then, we have several second language posters who could easily pass for native speakers, including all the Dutch contingent. I wonder if they owe this to the Dutch education system or to the Internet?

I take it you don’t ship McStarr. And Ringo is an adult if he wants to anonymously gush about his former bandmate then that’s fine.

Both loved each other, but not in the sense that most expect romantic love to be. John needed a mum figure and not in the way that an adult of his age would need a mother, but more in a way that a child needs his mother. Someone who would do everything for him, speak for him, and most importantly, someone who would give him what he wanted – in John’s case that is out of The Beatles. Contrary to what a lot of people think, John did care a lot about his image, and he didn’t want to do the dirty work. Yoko was fine with doing it, so why bother? Her image was going to suffer, not his. Not as much anyway considering that the fans like to blame anybody but The Beatles for the break up of The Beatles. On that note, interestingly, I found an interview of the fans immediately after the break up, and they happened to blame … *drum rolls* Linda! I get a feeling she was not all that loved during her lifetime. Definitely not initially. John used Yoko just as much as she used him, and I don’t think a lot of women wanting to associate with John would’ve done whatever he wanted. Yoko did cause problems, but John let her do it because that’s what he wanted. He was as tired of The Beatles as he was of Cynthia.
Coming to Cynthia, Mimi blamed her for pushing herself on to John because that was easy than accepting he loved her. And she wasn’t pushy coz everyone apart from Mimi has said that he was the one who pursued her. There’s no denying that he wanted her and needed her at one point of time. And then he didn’t. They were like yin and yang, and when two people have nothing in common, differences will tear them apart. Besides that, Cyn was a doormat and didn’t challenge John in any way whatsoever. And she was never suited to John. And all those who blame John for all that he did to Cyn, I can’t say that he is the only one at fault coz Cyn did let him get away with treating her the way she did. It’s not like she didn’t have guts, she did leave him at one point. Among all the girls that John hung around at that time, Astrid was best suited for him. And had they pursued a relationship, I think they would’ve lasted.
Yoko did go to Paul first. He himself said that. She went to him for some original lyrics, and he directed her to John thinking he would comply. I bet he has regretted that ever since. And there are accounts of John treating Yoko like s**t as well, and no, not from Goldman alone.
All said and done, I think John’s dream girl was Julia .

I wonder if she would of been more suited to Paul? Paul liked the classic 50’s ideal and was frustrated with Jane for pursuing her own career.

Thank you! I think it’s both. Dutch children are taught English from the age of ten, and it remains a mandatory course for at least four years, but it might even be part of the standard curriculum until graduation. It’s been twenty years since I’ve left school, so I’m not entirely certain.
I also had the fortune of having an American pen pal from the age of ten or eleven, and two British girls-next-door I used to play with when I was ten or eleven. Sadly, they didn’t stay very long since their parents were expats and got relocated. I can still hear myself yell in my best British accent: ‘Caroline, give me back my glasses!’, because the youngest would always nick them and refuse to give them back.
I didn’t get Internet until I was seventeen, but once I did, I frequented English forums, so it really is a bit of both. Another major factor: subtitles. Nothing gets overdubbed here, so just watching films and television shows teaches us a lot.
Anyway, thank you for the compliments

Interesting post that I mostly agree with. Yes she did go to Paul first…for song lyrics.
Not so sure about John pursuing Cynthia but then I haven’t read her version of the story so I don’t know how convincing she is. She always struck me as proper but boring and maybe not so trustworthy.
