1) John called his time away from Yoko of “Lost Weekend”. This happens to be the title of a famous book about a man who was driking to death…and had gay leanings.
2) John’s little poem to the book about Gay Liberation. He wrote it on the first person as if he was gay himself.
3) The song he and Paul wrote called ” Johnny Johnny, I don’t know”. It was written in 1960. See the lyrics. John says he loves Paul. Paul says something like. ” You are my boy, are you going to tell my dad?”
1) I haven’t read the book; but I have seen the movie. I don’t remember any references to the sexual orientation of the main character. Has anybody here read the book?
2) I didn’t know anything about that poem. Does anybody here have it/could you please post it?
3) First time I hear about that song. Same thing, does anybody have the lyrics?
“Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit” (“Perhaps one day it will be a pleasure to look back on even this”; Virgil, The Aeneid, Book 1, line 203, where Aeneas says this to his men after the shipwreck that put them on the shores of Africa)

@Oudis On number 1, the wiki for the book says “The book has also been noted for having homosexual overtones with a strong implication that Don Birnam is a latent homosexual” but I haven’t read it and can’t verify. There are numerous other references on the web to the author as a pioneer of gay literature.

I’ve googled the lyrics of “Johnny Johnny I Don’t Know” and found only one reference to the song in Portuguese; my Portuguese isn’t very good but the person who posted about it only said that it made you think, that is was “pretty clear” for the listeners. I haven’t been able to find John’s gay poem online. Maybe @Ahhh Girl could find them both, it’s what she does best.

One of the comments for the video has (what they think are) the lyrics. It’s difficult to ascertain; listening to the song, there’s a lot of garbled stuff.

Re : the poem
The poem as found in in the book The Art & Music of John Lennon and in The John Lennon Encyclopedia
Why make it so sad to be gay?
Doing your own thing is OK
Our bodies are our own
So leave us alone
Go play with yourself – today

Lennon would hardly be the first rock star to exhibit bi-sexual behaviour would he ? His relationships with epstein and sutcliffe were pretty intense by all accounts and it wouldn’t be such a stretch to assume that johns relationships with them crossed over into sexual relationships.
Interestingly paul speculated that john used epstein’s attraction to him as a lever to ensure that his interests were looked after first. That sounds about right to me and consistent with johns character…. following on from all that lennon became breezily relaxed about homosexuality in the 70s as the above post shows.

About 250 libraries have copies of The Gay Liberation Book. Interestingly, several seminaries and theological schools have copies of it.

Are you saying he was a manipulative person? Never heard that before -a wife-beater, an absent father, a drug abuser, an angry man, yes, but not manipulative.

Really? I thought there were lots of example of this behaviour out there?

Please elaborate @trcanberra. It’s usually Yoko who is called manipulative.
By the way, I’ve tried to listen to “Johnny Johnny I Don’t Know” several times but every single time my computer freezes. If somebody could post the lyrics I’d be very thankful.

I’d have to re-read all the biographies for specific examples sorry; but it’s just a strong feeling I got from all of them – so many times where he would manipulate people into doing things on his behalf that he wasn’t keen on doing in person.

From youtube:
Lyrics: Paul-P John-J P- Well oh Johnny, oh Johnny, oh god Johnny boy How are we gonna tell him Why don’t we go somewhere where he don’t own me Where can i go? Oh Johnny boy you wore me out. Oh Johnny, oh Johnny, oh Johnny boy Oh Johnny, you got me, you be my boy Well, a long time ago, I called you Johnny boy. J- Hey little boy, I’m packing my shoes, and I’m leaving you. I told my Mama I’m going to see my sister She don’t see me, I don’t know what I’m going to do. P- A long time ago I called you Johnny boy. I don’t know what to tell the fellas. Please, oh please, Johnny. J- Well I’ll tell the fellas that I do love you. P- I don’t know what I’m gonna do. I don’t know what I’m gonna do when I tell my father You love me Johnny, I love you Johnny I’m not gonna let you go. P- I don’t know what I’m gonna do when I tell my father You wore me down, you wore me down. You’re gonna leave, you’re gonna leave me Please, oh, I’m not gonna let you go J- Take the next bus out of town Then you won’t let your father down. I don’t know what good I am since I see life in front of us. P- Well get out of town, don’t hold me down. I don’t care. J- Get out of town, I don’t know (3x) I want to leave right now To get out of town. P- You know I want to do it all. I want to go far away, far away, I want to go far away. J- No, no, no, no P- Yeah, I’m going far away. Yeah, we’re going far away. We’re gonna leave. J- We’re going away, Yeah, we’re going away, Gonna leave town right now. And my friends, if that isn’t McLennon, i don’t know what is.

Lennon was very adept at manipulating others, but he was also easily manipulated himself at times (particularly when yoko, brian or paul were trying to force him through a project)
But in this instance it was paul who was suggesting it, and his opinion of lennons character is clearly a relevant one.

I always thought the quote was more indicative of Paul’s own manipulative nature, that he would suspect this.

That’s a funny way of looking at it.
After johns trip to barcelona with epstein pauls suspicions and fears about johns relationship with their manager were highly understandable.
Could be evidence of some McLennon jealousy going on. 😉
