Because when the Beatles became huge in the USA, people forgot about Elvis. So he hated them because he no longer was the king of music.

I dont think he hated John, more he hated that his popularity went down and the beatles were in some way responsible, as said above he felt threated. It didnt help Elvis tho that he was shoving out dire movies with bland sountracks which most didnt want to listen to, it wasnt current and up to date, he was an irrelevence sitting in his mansion. If you think of the greats of the 60’s people will think of Dylan, Beatles, Hendrix, Stones, The Who and many many many more before Elvis even gets a look in – if at all. If they do its more out of sentiment than anything based on his musical output.

In ’63 John slated Elvis on Juke Box Jury (namely the song Devil In Disguise) and folks complained but more so because it was ‘The King’ and less because the music was any good. John was right when he said that Elvis died when he went into the Army.

ahdn_paul_01He obviously realized their music was good and wanted to cash on it. His cover versions are horrible, though

I do like Devil in disguise though!

Elvis covered everything in the later years – he destroyed Bridge Over Troubled Wate and it is not fun listening to his rendition of My Way. Its quite disturbing listening to his later years after the 50’s Sun recordings, i hate those backing vocals that are slapped over everything. Burning Love is probably the last song he recorded that i really like. Always On My Mind is ok but the Pet Shop Boys cover is far superior in my opinion (Elvis fans will not be happy with that).

Its strange looking in on the wonderment and awesome that Elvis fans put on his music and realising that im the same with The Beatles.

Was it George who met Elvis again in the 70’s or Ringo? I remember one of them saying in The Beatles Anthology that he met him years later. I think its George. Will have rewatch that clip. Some nice person has given the answer on youtube thru putting up clips.

I’m sure he figured that a good song was a good song, no matter who wrote it.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

It’s a fact that Elvis hated hippies and the 60s counter culture.  Safe to say that he lumped the beatles into that mix.

He also had a special relationship with Richard Nixon and we all know Lennon and Nixon weren’t exactly best buddies.

Elvis was a weird guy.  I’d say his opinions of the Lennon, the beatles go far beyond his own falling out of favour in popular music and dwindling popularity although it was probably one part of the bigger picture.  Elvis was an old school Americana dude and he really hated the counter culture which he saw as a threat to the America he was a part of.  Let’s remember that Elvis was in the Army and probably took those army values pretty seriously.  There’s an interesting movie that i saw a long time ago looking at the meeting between Elvis and Nixon where Elvis was made into some special deputy agent or something.  Although it’s a movie, it was very accurate and truthful of what happened which is amazing given the ridiculousness of it all.  I found the whole thing really fascinating.

Yeah, he got Nixon to make him a special deputy agent to fight the Drug Problem…while he was addicted to every pill there was (and apparently even tried acid on New Year’s Eve 1965!) Quite a character.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Elvis actually did some of his best singing in his last years, the material leaning very much to MOR stuff, but still sounding great.

As far as hating John or the Beatles, Elvis couldn’t even use the toilet at the end, so I doubt whether he had much energy for hatrsd.

Early on, there might have been some professional rivalry.

I know that Elvis hated the Beatles because he believed that they came to the United States to make money, and they spread anti-American ideas. Elvis had to at least someone jealous of the Beatles. Elvis was ranked as the number one recording artist of the 50s, and number two in the 60s with the Beatles in the number one spot. I wish I was able to remember where I read that. This attitude towards the Beatles was obvious on the night they met. Elvis said something similar to,”If you guys are just gonna sit there and stare at me, then I’m going to bed.” John Lennon claimed that Elvis was stoned, and George Harrison smoked pot in Elvis’ backyard. John was bold enough to ask him why he wasn’t making the type of records he used to make. Number two? 60’s had just too much awesome bands so not sure how that is true. The Rolling Stones, The Who, Kinks, The Doors etc…

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.

Well, the Kinks and the Who didn’t really sell much at all in the USA of the ’60s, plus remember that all those bands only recorded during the second half of the decade, whereas El had a full ten years worth. And he probably averaged two albums per year – one soundtrack per movie, in other words.

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.
