So it is said. And it was true for Lennon. Overnight he went from obnoxious weirdo (ah, yes, though not in my book) to slightly touched genius.
For me, it happened with Glenn Campbell. I thought he was a corny country singer. How wrong I was. In reading his obit, I saw that he’d been part of the famous session group “The Wrecking Crew” – the great musicians behind the Beach Boys , Simon and Garfunkel, and many others.
And then … I landed on this:

Dying is a great money-boosting legacy creating effect for many artists, one reason being it’s viewed as being wrong to speak ill of the dead so their flaws are overlooked whilst promoting their strengths. For John, Yoko and the Estate have done a great job marketing John as this great deeply influential, peace-promoting loving father who always spoke his mind in the best possible way, it’s wrong tho as it doesn’t take long to find the other side of John. You need to know both sides to be able to love, respect or even like someone for any length of time. Truth, honesty etc.
As for the artist themselves, more rather than not I presume they’d rather be alive.
I’ll never understand why sales immediately increase as soon as someone dies as surely most people know the artists. But I get why; publicity etc as the person is in the news. No doubt when Paul goes ‘Hey Jude ’ and ‘Let It Be ’ will surge up the charts..

Even if people know about an artist it doesn’t mean he’s foremost in their mind most of the time. News of their passing reminds people, “Oh yeah, I hadn’t thought about him in years…!” + the subsequent hype from the media reinforces the reminder.
Now today I find, you have changed your mind

It’s rallying around the memory of the person in support, to feel closer to their spirit.
