An interesting anecdote related by Dennis Ferrante some time in the 70s. Ferrante was a sound engineer who apparently was a friend of John’s. It’s only 2 minutes and 24 seconds:
From what Ferrante relates, I’m kind of on Paul Simon’s side. John seemed to be behaving rather boorishly that day (maybe John just had something against guys named “Paul”…).
