OK, sorry everyone. This is a bit of a mess, obviously. For once it’s not my fault.

I asked my web hosts to look into why the history section wasn’t loading. I asked them to increase the resources and see if it would work. It didn’t, so they tried a couple of things including switching to different server software. That’s why we had some downtime earlier today.

Somewhere around that time some caching was put in place. I didn’t ask for this, but I think it was a tech support person trying to be helpful and save me some CPU and RAM. The unintended consequence was that a) anything that gets saved/submitted doesn’t show up for a few minutes, and b) it often displays a wrong person being logged in. It puts itself right when the cache expires, though I’m not sure what triggers that to happen (time or activity).

I’ve asked them to turn it off ASAP. I don’t *think* you’ll be able to post as other people or read their PMs. If that’s happening please let me know and I’ll shut down the forum right away. Again, I’m really, really sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen.

OK, this isn’t good. I’m really sorry for such an enormous screw-up.

I’ve put the forum into read-only mode. I’m going to disable PMs. It’s 10.40 here and I’ve got an open ticket with my hosts, and I’ve just chased them again.

I’m going to bed now. Hopefully in the morning it’ll be back to normal and I can reopen the forum. In the meantime please go off and do something more fun. Apologies.

I’ve created a new admin account, wiredtree, which is for my hosts to test things. If you see them posting in this thread or elsewhere please ignore it (not that you can do much else while the forum is locked down).

I’m really, really sorry everyone. This was absolutely not my fault, and not something I ever could have anticipated. I opened up a support ticket yesterday about a relatively minor issue, and everything went kaput. A total of seven support staff at my web hosts looked into it, and the last one cleared the Litespeed (server software) cache. That fixed things. I’m not going to get cross; I’m just happy it’s working again.

At least I hope it is. Please report any problems here. I’m off to bed now (10.30pm here in the UK; it’s been a long day) but I’ll come back first thing in the morning.

AG, if things aren’t fixed please text me and I’ll lock it down again.

Sorry all, I think I spoke too soon earlier. The caching issue seems to have returned. It might be because my hosts are re-enabling some things that got turned off during the testing process, but I want to be sure before I open the forum up again.

I’m going to make it read-only for around seven hours, till I get up and can check it properly. I’m uneasy about it being open and faulty while I’m asleep. Apologies.
