Sorry about that, folks! Have no idea what happened there, and am not going to even hazard a guess, other than there was an “Error establishing a database connection”!

Sorry to hear it – but glad it wasn’t just me :)

Sorry. Bloody hell, this is becoming intolerable. I rebooted the server and it’s working again for now, but I’ve no idea how long it’ll be before things start getting worse again.

The database error didn’t last too long that time, but there was an eight-hour period overnight (GMT) when it was offline.

I’ve no ideas if apologies are still worth anything, but I really am trying to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for your patience, always.

Don’t know if it helps with troubleshooting – but performance for me has been REALLY dire over the last 30 minutes or so.

Fine for me.

Maybe its a dirty ploy to make you hand over the iTunes Bootleg tracks.a-hard-days-night-george-10

Ha – could be.  For about an hour when they were unavailable my mailbox was jammed with people offering, begging, threatening …

Well that’s Apple for you. They really don’t like giving bargains away.

You need to give me a remote reboot switch :)

I was sitting here, going into severe posting withdrawal, knowing full well that no one would even look at it for another 6 hours …

Glad to know it was Joe. I guess I was on vacation or somewhere the last time the site went down, so my brain was in freak out mode this time.

It’s fine. Can’t even imagine running this site. It wasn’t overnight for me though! I spent about 10 minutes trying to figure out a way to tell you it was happening without access to the forum, then I realized there was Twitter. I did have the bootlegs to pass the time! Thanks again for fixing it.

I know speeds are still variable. The situation is this: the current setup has become so complex that, when something goes wrong (as servers are wont to do Now And Then ) Pothi is sometimes unable to isolate the cause. The recent outage was to do with the disc space filling up with backups after a cleanup failed to execute, but other faults were related to other issues.

It looks like we’ll be moving to yet another server, this time managed by a company who can do proper load balancing, resource distributions etc. With a bit of luck this will give us some stability, though I’m wary of substituting one set of problems for another. Bear with me while we work this out. We have a hosting company in mind and will try to move as soon as possible.

Thanks for the update Joe. Sounds a right pain but you have our patience and understanding. What are the chances of a rollback like what happened with the last migration to a new server, will there be regular back-ups saved throughout all of this as no one wants to see posts being lost again?

The chances of a rollback are very, very low. This is the server we’ve been on for a couple of years. When I recently switched temporarily it didn’t work, so I had to go back to this one (losing a few days’ posts in the process). It was a drastic measure that I don’t want to repeat.

If we move again I’ll make sure it’s properly tested before the domain name gets switched, and all being well we won’t lose any posts during the changeover. Generally we try to do these things while most users are asleep (ie middle of the night in America).

Cool. Thanks again Joe for all this and keeping us informed. You’d never believe how many sites crash often and nothing is ever mentioned about what is going on until its all resolved days/weeks/months later.

Thanks, Joe. Sorry it’s been such a pain.

Did the switch happen? The WordPress bar at the top of the screen looks different, and my little picture is blank instead of the back of George’s head.

No, not switched anything yet, but I did update to the latest WordPress version. That’s probably why you saw the admin bar, but it should have been removed now.

Ha ha – I look forward to seeing this all ‘live’ then.  Wonder what it will look like at this end?  :)

Minor thing, but the “___ topics with unread posts” section isn’t updating immediately when I click on a new post. Sometimes minutes after I’ve read one of the latest posts, it’ll still show up as new.

Woah, that’s the admin bar? I’ve had that since I joined the site, I was just noticing it looked different.

Not sure where to put this, but the Beatles Bible twitter account appears to have been hacked.

Oh, and in a post I made in the Christmas thread, I couldn’t remove italics at all.
