Apologies if this has been asked and answered before but is there anything that can be done about the number of unread PM’s in the box or is it a cache thing? Mine has been stuck on a number most of the night regardless of any received; click on mark all read, refresh the page and its still the previous number. Difficult to know if anything is new or not.

If nothing can be done then fair do’s, just a-wondering.

And thanks as always for all the fixing you do with these annoying oddities and putting up with these posts.

Sometimes I have to mark as read a few times, normally less than 3, then it’s fine.

I got way passed three with little difference.

I’ve tried all the tricks several times over several days and still had messages hung up. Are we back to the conversation about Joe coming around to our houses?

mmm – ctrl+F5 will clear your browser cache. It sounds like the stats are being cached on your machine, which is why you’re seeing old data. It’s not being cached by my server. Short of going round to everyone’s house and clearing their cache for them, I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it.

I genuinely haven’t a clue about any of the PM thing. I sometimes wonder if it’d be easier to just disable the facility altogether. The Simple Press devs aren’t really interested in/able to troubleshoot it, as it’s a problem they’ve only encountered on one other forum (ie they can’t replicate it, therefore cannot troubleshoot it). I don’t know what’s causing it either. Same with the missing PMs.

Serious question: if we’re stuck with things as they are, would people rather have unreliable PMs and unread counts, or no PMs at all?

Edit: Regarding the image popups being of low quality, that was caused by me moving images onto a different server to save bandwidth (I won’t explain in detail because it’s slightly boring and techy). The other server resizes images to automatically display the most suitable version. However, in this case it was displaying the thumbnail correctly, then enlarging the same thumbnail image so it appeared blurry. It was clever, but not clever enough.

The best fix is to disable the thumbnail enlargement thing, so instead of it showing the full size as a popup, it takes you away from the forum to the image’s location on the web. So clicking on the image in this post takes you to the full size jpg file.

If it’s still doing weird stuff for people I can disable the thumbnail thing altogether, so people get the full size image in the post. It’s up to you lot – let me know.

I know about the image popups being of low quality. That’s a different issue which I’ll look into.

The former, PMs are really useful for sending things that you generally wouldn’t broadcast on a public forum.

I’d far rather have slightly annoying PM’s than none at all as although it can get frustrating its better than nothing at all, and as ASJ said you can post and talk to people about things that are either more private and you dont want on here and save the forum being bogged down by stuff. Folk find them helpful and of great benefit.

As for the picture thing i’d personally prefer it if everything was kept on site but its not a major issue so either way i’m not fussed – maybe when on a portable device like an phone it would be more of a pain.

Less reliable is better than not at all, if the mailman lost a piece of your mail it would be extremely annoying and inconvenient, but you’d still want to be able to use the mail. And if every time you got a box full of bills and no letters/packages it would look like there was more than there really was, but you still use mail.

I’d rather deal with occasionally disappearing PM’s in a box that might tell me I have 2 messages when I have none, than not have the option to talk directly to someone.

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

OK, I think that’s unanimous so they’ll stay. If I ever find a fix I’ll apply it ASAP.

I’d rather have the thumbnail. Some of these images can be unweildy.

I thought I was immune to the PM box number issue… but alas:

Over the weekend, I was up to 17, down to 4, up to 12, down to 0, up to 17 again, and on and on. It was a real roller coaster. Whiplash.

As I mentioned to Faceo on another thread, our PM system is almost a quirky as we all are.

@Joe  Another auto link that should be made case sensitive – With The Beatles . Have noticed a few instances where somebody’s said something like, but with the Beatles, and you know what happens next…

@Joe

Am getting a lot of pages failing to load properly instead showing the code of the page, one example is attached. A refresh sorts it but thought it might be worth mentioning. Not getting it with any other site.page-fail..JPGImage Enlarger

Also, I just typed the phrase ad-l i b – and it connected the l, and the i, and b to the Let It Be  album. Liberate!

Testing: with the Beatles, ad-lib, With The Beatles , Ad-LIB .

Seems to be OK now. I changed a few other everyday phrases so they shouldn’t autolink, but I’m sure there are more tweaks to follow.

MMM, I’ve never seen that problem and can’t troubleshoot it unless I do. Sorry.

Thanks, @Joe. Sure there are more tweaks to follow, as the only way refine it is seeing how things work in practice. Who’d have thought ad-lib would autolink before seeing it do it? We look and learn!
