There’s going to be some disappointed people when we throw them off the roof. Is there a word for that, the equivalent of defenestration (but not involving windows)?

It will give us time to bask in the thoughts of the other levels for longer as we see the more prolific posters progress through the steps.
Ooooo, looking at the top posters list I realize there will be 9 of us on the rooftop if the change goes into effect today. GREAT TIMING!!!

I think it’s a great idea to make the roof less crowded, @Joe. Frequency of posting has changed a lot over the time I’ve been here. Someone making a 1000 posts is no longer the unusual thing it once was. I remember that mr. Sun king coming together was Top Poster when I joined, and his nearly 7000 posts seemed an impossibly high benchmark. That has changed.
When you changed the ranking values before, it was because posting habits had changed, and the idea was to reflect that from what I’ve read at the start of this thread. In the time since I’ve been here, posting habits have changed even further, and so it makes sense to again update the ranking values to reflect that.
I can’t see it leading to the type of races with posting for the sake of posting that happened previously, and which disappointed so many of us, because the culture of the forum has also changed.
If I am escorted off the roof, rather than being shoved over the railing as happened during the infamous Rutles rooftop gig, I’ll use the stairs. Though I doubt I’ll have made it halfway down the top flight before I’m turning around and marching straight back up given how close my post count to the proposed new top rank.

I only have one reservation about this. I don’t want it to become something that scares off people with lower post counts.
Truth be told, this is my fear and my strong hesitation against the change.

Ah, we would never treat a venerable Forumpudlian like yourself in such an undignified manner. And we will all save your hammock in preparation against your return to Rooftopdom.

But then, it could equally be said that the Top Posters list could be off-putting. I know I was more aware of reaching that list being an almost impossible aim when I joined, and that’s when the number to reach it was much lower. The forum rankings are just a bit of fun, and nobody should be posting just to reach the roof (or the Top Posters list). In the end, it is not the amount of posts that matter but the quality of the conversations they contribute to.
It does make sense to me to have the top rank reflect roughly the lower number needed to feature on the Top Posters list, and that is around 5000 posts.

Their wasn’t much of a stir when Joe changed the post counts the first time many years ago so I doubt there would be any negative stir this time. I agree with Ron, the Top Posters would scare more people off than post count ranks would.
I feel that post counts should match the general posting habits of the users and now there are on average more posts from more active posters.

I’m pleased you’ve come around, @Ahhh Girl. When I joined, I think the lowest number to feature on the Top Posters list was something like 1900, which meant after reaching the rooftop, there was another step to take that recognised your contribution to, and participation in, the forum, but when you’d reached the roof, it was obtainable.
To me, the gap between the top rank and the Top Posters list is now so huge that it no longer is the simple step-up from reaching the roof to appearing as one of the top contributors to the lifeblood of the forum.
Obviously, the number needed to reach the Top Posters list will continue to increase. However, if you reach the top rank now, it requires you to do 5 times(?) the amount of posts to reach the Top Posters, whereas it used to be double the amount of posts. With a new top rank set at 5001, it means you won’t even have to double until it reaches 10,000 to feature on the Top Posters.

That’s why I’m not changing anything on the lower ranks. It’s only once people are committed forum members (ie 100+ posts) that the goalposts are moving.
I’ll make the change now. Apologies to anyone who finds themselves detectuted (thanks @pepperland, though I’m still not convinced that’s actually a word!). I’ll be with you, not racing, but slowly clambering back up the Apple staircase, with or without members of the Metropolitan Police.

Someone who likes math(s) please let us know what year @Ellie will join the rooftop party (5001 posts) if she continues to double her post count each year.

With a little help from my friend Excel I did the math, if Ellie doubled her post count each year, it would take her 11 years and by the end of 2027 she would already be on the rooftop with 6144 posts.
EDIT: I realized that I did it as if she started doubling (is that a word?) her post count next year and she didn’t post this year, If she started this year she would be on the rooftop in 2026.
