I welcome that idea, ’cause frankly I think all those redundant “Hard Day’s night” heads are kind of an eyesore, and most of them could be eliminated. You can hardly telll one from the next, they’re so small and lo-def. And I think they’re overused in general: Employing a smiley to convey a certain tone or commentary is fine, but inserting them into a block of text in place of typing a simple “Paul” or “Ringo” – that really irritates me.
Sorry, don’t wanna be a blue meanie or offend anyone, just giving my opinion. And I know I have no right to complain, since this is Joe’s webpage (& a fine one), and I’ve certainly employed the smileys myself a coupla times. I found both the pointing-upward and nose-thumbing ones most useful. even though they’re so small I can barely tell whose faces they are. (Ringo and Paul?)
OK, rant over. As for suggestions…I have none of my own. I’ll leave it to everyone else to think up some really good ones. I’m not sure just what circumstances would call for “Two Virgins ” or Apple ones to be used…
Man, that “Von Bonehead” dude could be an insufferable dick in those days – glad he never posted again (except for a little)
ooooof. we use the apple so much now!

but I won’t do the exis. Let’s keep it manageable.
…What exactly do you mean by “manageable”? I understand that you don’t want too many smileys, and that they would need to portray an emotion unique enough to what we already have in order to warrant including them, but if they meet that criteria is that not reasonable enough? Not only that, but are they not important enough to justify inclusion? Sure, we can have some random girl that portrays an emotion useful enough for a smiley , but if there’s a nice-quality and croppable photo of Jürgen, who helped lead to the adoption of the boy’s still-recognisable moptop haircuts, out there that portrays something just as useful there’ll be no consideration whatsoever?
By the way, I didn’t mean to thank that post.

I think there are a few considerations. The number of smileys, the emotions they portray, and the significance in the Beatles’ story. On the latter point, I don’t want to drill down too far, else we’d end up in Mona Best/Dot Jarlett territory. My guess is that, while many here have probably heard of Jürgen Vollmer before, they’d struggle to pick him out in a police line-up.
“Manageable” means that I don’t want to spend my time cutting out tiny images of minor players. It also means when the smiley drawer is opened, people aren’t overwhelmed by dozens and dozens of images. I’ve already cut back on a lot that weren’t really serving a useful purpose, and I’m broadly happy with the current lot.

To be fair, if it weren’t for the smiley, I’d struggle to pick Neil Aspinall out of a police line-up too. And I’d recognise Klaus Voormann anywhere, though perhaps that’s just me.

I don’t have a specific one in mind, but I feel like we don’t have a smiley that just means sad.
We have thiswhich is sad-annoyed maybe, and thiswhich is sad-confused, thiscould be sad, but it also reads kind if confused, and this one just seems empty.
If anyone has an idea for a sad smiley, or one they use for sad that I didn’t bring up that would be cool. I might try finding one myself later.

I’ve always used for sad. Never thought of it as sad-confused. Now it’s suggested, still see it as just sad and not sad-confused.

I use as like an awkward smiley. One that you would preface with a sigh and a “well….”
Like if I said Abbey Road came out in 1968 and someone corrected me:
“…yeah you’re right”.
Never thought of it as a sad smiley before.
I demand a Bob Wooler smiley!

Alrighty, then. I know I’d recognise him, but then again I’m a bit of an Exi-maniac, so…
But just because we can’t have them doesn’t mean I want them any less. I just love ’em too much

I think some punctuation causes a problem with the auto-links for the songs.
I thought so too but then why Sgt. Pepper works just fine?
The follies of technology? I genuinely have no idea sorry.
As for smileys: Joe is open to new smileys provided the convey an emotion we don’t currently have. He doesn’t want 200 smileys all very similar and will only add smileys if they serve a distinct purpose – but if you have some ideas, please do post them here – I’d love to see them! https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..ggestions/
Great! didn’t see that. That’s my point, smileys shouldn’t just be put by the hour and ending up being like thousands, but the ones that are there already are just too few, and there are many other emotions that could be original and funny that aren’t featured right now. I’ll see if I come up with some.
If you find any gaps, please do make some suggestions!
There could also be a display of smiley categories, either by emotions, members of the band, just like the emojis on WhatsApp, that are separated by topics. There are currently 54 smileys, I think at least 200 in blocks of 50 would seem about right.
Currently they’re sorted by row:
John
Paul
George
Ringo
5th Beatles
Misc.
Re. the bolded text in your quote, Joe has more or less intimated that probably will never happen – see post 265 in this thread for his words on the matter, for example, or even post 1.
