We need a Martha appreciation thread. We gotta give the fluffy doggy some more love on this forum. In fact, I say we start an official fan club!

I may have just found some Klaus-faces with smiley potential. Bear in mind, they’re all stock-photo-y (fortunately his beautiful face isn’t covered with anything), but he’s got adorable expressions. Lemme know if they’re suitable.
Of course! We’re still waiting for a Klaus smiley, and we want it now!

C’mon guys, lets be honest: The current crop of smileys is lackluster at best. Most of them aren’t even in color. No Yellow Submarine emote, no Sgt. Pepper drum, no Martha, and yet too many Apple variants. We can do so much better.

As for smileys, I don’t care whether they’re in color or not, but there are a couple that we’re missing:
1. A smiley Paul
2. Martha
3. Linda
4. Maureen
5. The Exis
Apart from that I love the smilies, and I don’t think there’s too many apple variants– = “good job”, =love, =”nicetry”helpmemyspacebarisbroken

How DARE you insult our beloved Beatles Bible Smileys, which are the pride and joy of the forum! That which all other forums aspire to! That which makes our fingers itch when we type anywhere else and are deprived of them!
I feel like their simplicity is part of what makes them effective as smileys. I mean, everywhere else you get 🙂 and 😛 . They’re primarily meant to convey emotion.
…that having been said, we should totally have a yellow sub.

I can’t think of anyone suggesting getting rid of the majority of our Smileys before, @MattWatchingWheels. I think most of us are very happy with them. The last time @Joe retired a bunch of Smileys he felt were no longer serving a purpose he got complaints, and there are those who still miss certain retired Smileys.
The other thing to take account of is that we like our Smileys to convey something, to express a thought or emotion. They are not meant for just decoration when we use them in a post but, instead, add to what is being said in the post. Myself, I have no idea what the Pepper drum skin or a Yellow Submarine would convey in a post.
As to the Apples, we love our Apples. They are among our most popular and most used Smileys.
I don’t find them lacklustre at all (though wish there were more John and George).

I do wish there were more John and George, but Fiddy’s suggestions are also pretty good.

2. Martha
Could serve a purpose occasionally (a moment where you’re feeling warm and fuzzy inside)
3. Linda
4. Maureen
5. The Exis
We have Patty and Yoko, we should probably have Linda and Maureen too…
But even if there are no more added, I think it is one of the best features of the forum and am so thankful for having them.

It’s not a matter of “we” – Joe is responsible for all the design himself. And (my idiotic 2010 opinion notwithstanding) I would hate to lose any of them. BB and Fiddy know the score – those apples mean a lot to many of us!
As for the future, if Joe ever feels the need to add more, I strongly agree with the suggestions of Martha, Linda, Moe and Klaus/Exis. And wouldn’t mind Mimi and Cynthia as well…despite the awkwardness of Cyn and Yoko being forced to share a smiley menu.

We don’t need to lose any of them. Nowhere did I say that, fellas. We CAN however add to them and, if I may be so bold, increase their default size. They appear as little itty bitty things and while we don’t want them too big, if I can’t even tell what the emotion is supposed to represent, there’s a problem.
Even taking that off the table, our roster of emotes is just too limited. There are many eras of Beatle faces to choose from and we only have A Hard Day’s Night covered.
Please don’t take my comments harshly, but I’ve been on other forums with emotes of people and there’s a lot of potential here that’s going untapped in my opinion. Granted I understand this is a small staff and again I assure you that i’m not trying to undermine anyone here but, there’s a world of possibilities here that could be explored. Even if you like the current crop as is, there’s always room for improvement.

If they’re too big they become pixelated and mess up the spacing of the lines of text. Besides, it’s not that hard to identify the emotions, and most of the time you can tell from the context of the post anyway.

I think Joe’s more worried about representing all the emotions than all the eras, and all the AHDN ones create a nice sort of aesthetic, don’t you think?

No, it was well after I joined. He originally removed and I kept it in my signature and used it so much (along with a couple other users who did as well) that he reinstated it.
I think the size is fine — they mess with the line spacing enough as it is, especially the taller ones like
It’s worth nothing that they’re not just from AHDN , this one’s from MMT: and this is from Help ! era and I personally don’t see how adding more eras increases their emotive range unless these other-era expressions happen to be something we haven’t covered.

I have to disagree on the size. They’re absolutely too small. I mean…
Look at this one. I can barely even see any expression in paul’s face. With most of these I have to squint just to be able to make them out.
Again, I want to stress: I know this isn’t my house so to speak, but as someone who has used forums with these kinds of emotes before, It’s not unheard of to think about.

As the person who spent a long time lobbying for it to be added, I can say without hesitation that it isn’t.
Filmed on 27 November 1966, it’s from John’s second appearance on Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s BBC comedy series Not Only… But Also, with the episode being broadcast on 26 December 1966.
John’s playing a toilet attendant at the poshest public lavatory in London…

With that smiley, it’s not about the expression, it’s the fact that the arms are up, imo.
But whatever, I’m not disqualifying your opinion at all – there are some that are pretty small, I agree, but I think the idea is it stuffs up the line spacing too much if they are any bigger.

But thats the thing: The fact that his arms are up is the only thing you can see, and thats no fun. I understand about the spacing, and i must say that’s a pretty bad limitation albeit not Joe’s fault. It’s more a shortcoming of the forum template IMO.
Incidentally, if anyone wants to check out a forum I use with smileys in this style, feel free to compare:

It runs on a different layout than this so that might have something to do with it………. (Sigh!)
