When I introduced the Beatles smileys I wanted to keep them just for A Hard Day's Night-era photos, but a few others have started creeping through (Two Virgins , Apple logo, Blue Meanie). So I wondered whether people think I should increase the selection to other eras.
I don't want to have dozens, but I'll add more when some really good designs come up. Here are some thoughts:
- John with his arms in the air from the Help ! cover, for celebration.
- Abbey Road figures.
- Maybe even thumbnails of each of the album covers, for when people are discussing them.
What I really want is for smileys that actually say something, rather than just dozens of Beatle pics for the sake of it. That's why I didn't want all the Help ! figures, just the one of John.
Can anyone suggest any pics that might work well, and what emotion/activity they might signify?

I welcome that idea, 'cause frankly I think all those redundant “Hard Day's night” heads are kind of an eyesore, and most of them could be eliminated. You can hardly telll one from the next, they're so small and lo-def. And I think they're overused in general: Employing a smiley to convey a certain tone or commentary is fine, but inserting them into a block of text in place of typing a simple “Paul” or “Ringo” – that really irritates me.
Sorry, don't wanna be a blue meanie or offend anyone, just giving my opinion. And I know I have no right to complain, since this is Joe's webpage (& a fine one), and I've certainly employed the smileys myself a coupla times. I found both the pointing-upward and nose-thumbing ones most useful. even though they're so small I can barely tell whose faces they are. (Ringo and Paul?)
OK, rant over. As for suggestions…I have none of my own. I'll leave it to everyone else to think up some really good ones. I'm not sure just what circumstances would call for “Two Virgins ” or Apple ones to be used…
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I would still like Stu with shades, to indicate both Stu and cool. If I can find a good picture, I'll post it.
I like your ideas, but I'm not sure about the Abbey Road figures. What would they indicate? Would you include the white VW?
Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!
Don't know really. I thought Abbey Road could be a generic 'walking away' one, but there's probably no need for a smiley to signify that.

I like the idea of the thumbnails of the albums for when they're being discussed.
If you decide to do that, though, I think you should put them in a separate smiley tab, you know? Like where it says smileys, you could put a tab next to it that says “Covers” and that's where you would be able to access the cover smileys.
I'd like to see a smiley of Paul, that can be found on the cover of Revolver , where he appears to be bawling… but Ringo's head is covering part of his face, so I don't know if that would be possible.
Maybe you could do some Yellow Submarine ones of the cartoon Beatles. Or the cartoon Beatles from the actual Beatles cartoon!
Also the glove from YS might be useful.
I'm in love, but I'm lazy.

He definitely was a big man. From all accounts I've read or heard he had a big heart as well.
The man is most deserving of a smiley, at the very least.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
