Guys, so sorry. My server admin guy had to do a repair to the database as there were quite a few broken things. I didn’t know there were any problems with profiles needing upgrading, but I’ll keep an eye on it. Is the problem still there?

EDIT: found out the problem. The forum was being cached, which it shouldn’t have been. So you were seeing a stored version which was saved before your post was made. Hence, when you reloaded it you couldn’t see it, even though the message was being saved.

I’ve added an exception to the caching plugin so it should work OK now. For info, most pages are cached on the main part of the site as it speeds up loading. They get rebuilt every hour when someone requests them, or when a new comment etc is added.

BTW Joe, I know your answer would be like “Of course I do!!” but just in case…. do you have a backup of the site?? I mean, if I were you with all these problems, I’d back it up… maybe not the forum but all the info…. a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Fear not! If it all disappeared I could restore a backup, though hopefully it won’t come to that.

The database which stores all the articles, comments, forum posts etc gets backed up daily and sent to a webmail account. The design and various images, theme files etc get backed up Now And Then when I remember, and there are versions stored offline on my work and home computers. I’ve also got my web hosting company (linode.com) backing up the files at regular intervals.

Sincere apologies to you all for all the downtime, weird quirks and oddness that sometimes takes place. You’re very patient people. I’m not a server administrator – my background’s journalism, and I’d much rather write new articles than have to troubleshoot when things go wrong. Unfortunately a bit of low-level tinkering is often required to keep things running smoothly, and quite often things get broken in the process. Other things just go wrong due to third-party apps running (or not) on the site. Thanks for bearing with me!

No problem at all. I understand the stress involving computers I worked with them more than 10 years… and I think I prefer the stress of teaching to dealing with a software problem.. trust me…

LOL

When I first saw that clip in the Anthology, I had to stop it because I was laughing too hard.

“I said ‘Hey, you’ve even got The Times in there’, you know, like his dick wasn’t out” The way he says it is just hilarious

Also, I think this is my 50th post. Woo

There's a new version of the forum software that I'm going to install around midday tomorrow (UK time). Hopefully it'll be smooth, but if you visit and it's offline, or if there are problems with anything, that'll be why. I'll be working on getting everything running smoothly(ish). a-hard-days-night-paul-4

Yes, good luck too you. 🙂

When I Twish And Shout, it makes the Girl say "What Goes On?", and than I say, "I do this Here, There and Everywhere", and than she finishes by saying "Honey Don't".

The upgrade was minimally complicated, but thanks for the goodwill. The new version doesn't seem to have added much (any?) in the way of new features. Google 'simple press forum' if you're really interested in finding out more.

Thanks for the extra pics Skye. I'll convert the better ones when I get a chance. It's a shame there aren't more of John and George – they're getting a little outnumbered.

Before anyone points it out, I know a lot of the fonts have gone very small. I'm trying to fix the problem of the right-hand side of the forum falling off in some browsers, and had to reset the forum skin to the default. I'm talking to the makers of the software to try and isolate the issue, so please bear with it for now.

So when it's done, will it just be buttons? Not [QUOTE] Quote and Reply?

Can you use this?

Those would be a nice addition, Skye.

And Joe, if you can't seem to fix the fonts, I'm not sure it'll be the biggest bother anyway-
I think it looks quite cute all teensy-weensy. a-hard-days-night-ringo-10But good luck, mate!

Yes to the former! It should be OK now.

I'll take a look at the Xmas icons, though I kind of wanted it to stay AHDN -era (mostly). Otherwise I might just end up with hundreds of Beatles smileys which would look a mess.

Still working on the fonts thing. Shouldn't take long, but I want to try and to it properly rather than a rough fix.
