Right, sorry everyone. I think everything is fixed now, but the setup of this site is quite complex so it’s hard to be 100%. I’m reopening the forum because as far as I can tell we’re all on the new server. Thanks for your patience.

Yayyyy it’s back!
Thanks Joe, for this and for all your hard work.
I hope it’s all working properly, but I’m sure it is. If we find anything broken we’ll let you know

I’ve started adding Wikipedia-style tables of content to the articles on the site (songs, albums, people etc). It’ll take a while to add them to all the features (there are hundreds), but it should make it a little easier to jump to sections of interest, and for search engines to index the content.
Here’s an example from Double Fantasy :

The site (and others that I run, or which live on my server) has had multiple instances of downtime in the past two weeks due to bots trying to log in. They do this through automated attempts known as brute force attacks. There have been so many that often the server gets overloaded and goes offline.
I’ve had to add some brute force protection to stop this happening again. It should block known malicious IP addresses. However, it might also block some legitimate users. Hopefully this will rarely happen.
If you experience this, firstly I’m sorry, and I hope you understand why I had to introduce the measures. Secondly, if you’re locked out I believe you’ll get an opportunity to request a review. I don’t handle these reviews; they (and the blocking) are done by a third party called tinyShield. If it happens to you, please be patient, and if it persists please contact me (using the contact form), send me your forum username and IP address, and I’ll permanently whitelist you.
If it’s locking everyone out, that’s obviously not good and I’ll try some different brute force protection. Feedback welcome!

I’m not sure if this is unique to me, but i’ve gotten locked out pretty much every day, so we will see if it persists. I may ask for a whitelist if nobody else is experiencing it this much.

@Joe has only just added this tool, @sir walter raleigh, so if you’ve had trouble logging in previously that’s down to something else.
Hope this does the trick, Joe, and doesn’t cause too many lockouts; it’s been annoying the amount of downtime there’s been in recent weeks so it’s worth seeing if this works as a fix rather than hindrance.

Hi. What happens when you get locked out? Is it mid-session, or when you try to log in? Give me as much info as you can and I’ll look into it.
As RN said, it’ll have nothing to do with the new measures, which were only introduced yesterday.

Greetings Joe,
Is there a cause for the issue of sometimes not being able to log in from the default fab forum menu? I’ve had several instances of this occuring. Though it is admittedly a minor problem, it would be nice if I could hear about it from yourself.
Side note: Thank you for working so much to keeping the site up and running. I, as well as others, appreciate it immensely.

Is it a problem on mobile, or other devices? I know @meanmistermustard has struggled to log in on mobile, and I’m looking into it.
If you could let me know what happens (error messages or anything else) when you try to log in, it would help me isolate the issue.

It is when I try to log in. I’ll let you know if it keeps happening after your fix and post a screenshot. Thanks @joe

I’ve made a couple of minor changes to the non-forum part of the site, which I’ve been meaning to do for a while. php code included for reference.
People sometimes ask for publication dates for my articles, normally for citations in papers etc. I’ve added a couple of lines of code to display this, just below the page title:
<?php echo “<strong>Published</strong>: ” . the_date( ”, ”, ”, false); echo ” | <strong>Last updated:</strong> “. the_modified_date( ”, ”, ”, false); ?>
For the historical blog posts I couldn’t use the same code, because I amended the publication date so it looked as though they were published in the 1960s etc. So those don’t show a publication date, but do have the last-updated:
<?php echo “Last updated: “. the_modified_date( ”, ”, ”, false); ?>
Potential search terms: add last modified date updated wordpress publication date php code template php

I’ve finally put together a proper index page for Paul McCartney . Go see: https://www.beatlesbible.com/p…..mccartney/
It’s got a feed of videos from his YouTube channel, latest PM forum posts, song of the day (31, based on the day of the month, but eventually I’ll add 366 and make it different each day of the year), Wings album of the day (all the studio albums on a 7-day loop), and PM album of the day (31, based on the day of the month).
As you might have seen, I’ve spent quite a while recently adding Paul song features. I’m going to carry on with that, because I’d like it to be as close to complete before I become old(er) and grey(er). I’ll start with Wings’ Wild Life and keep going chronologically (that’s the plan, at least).

Thanks!
I’ve made some other changes. I decided to add some more feeds to the site’s main homepage, so it now has:
- Paul McCartney song of the day
- Paul McCartney album of the day
- Wings album of the day
- George Harrison album of the day
- John Lennon song of the day
- John Lennon album of the day
- Ringo Starr album of the day
Phew. I’m not sure if I’ll ever get round to adding enough George and Ringo song features to warrant songs of the day feeds for them, but maybe one day.

Joe updating the Paul section with new entries for many songs has reminded me of many tracks from the mid 80’s.Yeah, on the whole, it’s reminded me why I gave up on Paul after Venus And Mars — with the exception of the odd song that popped up along the way as exceptions to the rule.
Now today I find, you have changed your mind
It’s been quite illuminating, working through them all. Obviously the 80s wasn’t a great time on the whole for Paul, but there are some diamonds in the rough.
I particularly like ‘Be What You See (Link)’ on Tug Of War , which is McCartney trying to do Pink Floyd. It’s slightly McCartney II , and I wish he’d make more experimental records like that.
I’m going to carry on till the McCartney songs list is fully populated, then I might dig a little deeper into collaborations, b-sides etc. If you have suggestions please add them as comments on that page.
After that I’m planning to do George’s songs, which should take a lot less time. I doubt I’ll do Ringo’s at all, apart from maybe the greatest hits and singles.
And when all that’s done, I have plans to properly update the history section with all the stuff that happened from 1970 onwards, though that’s a huge job. I also need to keep my Bowie site ticking over, because that’s half-finished too.
