Personally, I would rather know who the most thanked is than the person with the most posts. Anyone can sit at the computer and post nonsense ad infinitum, but it takes a clever or useful person to be thanked, right?
Very true but i dont see what benefit would be from it. The person with the most thanks doesnt have to be the person who has been the most helpful or posted the more interesting posts. Has someone who has posted 45 posts of fun comments and replies and gotten 15 thanks posted better or more helpful comments than a user who has done so twice and received 12?
Of course the number of times someone posts also doesn’t represent much either outside of the total. Ideally folk are posting for a reason greater than just to add to their total.

@Expert Textpert I’m with @meanmistermustard on this one. There are no rules around using the thanks button (nor should there be). Some people don’t seem to need much reason to hit the thanks button and use it a lot (not a criticism of anyone, just a fact), while others use it sparingly. It is far too random and arbitrary. So for myself I don’t think anything much is to be learnt from which of us has the most thanks. However, the individual posts that have received the most thanks might be interesting, and guide people to look at something they might not otherwise or have missed…

I think it should be the most thanked post that is highlighted not the most thanked user

Most thanked posts would be interesting, would be far more revealing than a user having a total of 1,567 posts.
Who wants the job of going thru every post since the thanks button came in and cataloguing the numbers?

Actually we’ve had this discussion before. We vetoed the idea then.

Fair do’s. Forgot about that and i wasn’t thinking in terms of competition. I’m certainly not in favour of folk posting in a bid to receive attention or abusing the system (i can see folk agreeing to ‘thank’ each others posts).

What just thank every single post you see? That would be cheating!

Or it could improve the quality of the site. If people tried to write better messages in order to get thanked, we would have a better forum. Instead of people just posting random things to make it to the rooftop.
Maybe yeah. I’ve seen a lot of people post crap to make it to the rooftop (even me, sorryHalf of what I say is meaningless, no lie.) so if we credit one certain post we’ll get better writing. You guys may be onto something!

It’s that time again: I need to move the site to a new web host. Skip to the bit in bold if you don’t want the details.
I’ve been with Future Hosting since December, but I’ve never found their customer support good. I’ve actually had problems with them from day one – when the site failed to work they said it was just a matter of waiting till domain records caught up. Eight hours of downtime and repeated requests later on, someone bothered to go in and check the records, found the fault I was asking to be fixed, then put it right. Not a good start but I didn’t want to move twice in two days.
I think the problem with missing PMs also started when I moved to FH, but I quickly realised they wouldn’t help me investigate so I had to live with it. I’ve been paying for a fully managed server but feel like they don’t really care when things go wrong. I get standard responses from bored sounding staff – when my account was suspended at the weekend I asked them to help me troubleshoot the CPU spikes, and got a generic cut-and-pasted answer about some things somewhere possibly being badly coded. Like, dur. No effort to help me look at error logs or isolate the cause.
I’m going to a company – WiredTree – with a much better reputation for customer service. I’ve spent a lot of time browsing the threads on WebHostingTalk lately and they consistently get good reviews, and the communication I’ve had with them so far has been positive. We’ll see how it pans out. Hopefully the site will also be a bit faster, but there will also inevitably be some troubleshooting to do.
To avoid losing article comments and forum posts, the site will be put into read-only mode while the migration takes place. I don’t yet know when it’ll happen – completion time isn’t up to me, but it’ll be sometime in the next few days once my account is set up. So if you see a notice saying the forum is temporary locked, it’s happening.
It should last for just a few hours but may take longer. If everything is open you can carry on posting as normal.
I’ll post updates here if there’s anything to say, so don’t feel you have to ask if it’s happened yet. Thanks in advance for your patience, and apologies also if things break.

Good luck on the move Joe.
We’ll be here waiting for the site to come back online, gasping to post some inane/witty/informative nonsense.

If you can read this, congratulations! You’re looking at the new server.
It probably doesn’t look any different. Please wait till people around the world catch up – it can take a while for ISPs to update their records and associate beatlesbible.com with the new server’s IP address. Don’t worry if that doesn’t mean a lot to you either. It’s probably better that way.
Anyway, now you’re here, please post away. Hopefully all is good here.
