I have a question, Joe, about something I have been wondering about for a while. I just tried to post it before but apparently I got the maths sum wrong. (You should probably change that if possible, bots could probably do the maths but they couldn't do something where it asks you to read. I don't know though – I'm not a computer whiz)
Below it says Membership and says There are 164 Members. Then it says There has been 1 Guest. Who was the guest and what does that mean? Also, who is gorky5, the moderator? What does a moderator do?
Cheers, Matt
Hi Matt. I'll take these in turn.
1. The site's built using WordPress, and there's a plugin (add-on) called Simple:Press Forum, which is what runs this forum. The arithmetic is, as you realise, a spam prevention measure which seems to keep the bots out. I don't think the software allows an alternative CAPTCHA (what these measures are known as – it stands for 'Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart') but I'll see.
Sorry if it's a nuisance. I'll try disabling it and see if we get spam here. Did you lose what you've written when you got the sum wrong?
2. The guest was a user account I deleted. I can't remember exactly why, but I deleted the account and left the person's message up on the forum. The name next to the message was then automatically changed to 'guest', even though I normally people have to sign up before they can post.
3. gorky5 is another of my accounts. I have three accounts with different admin/user rights, so I can test the forum software and see what others are seeing. I might change it though as I don't really need a moderator account.
Moderators don't do anything as such – I occasionally edit messages for broken links/images or badly-formatted quotes (though these are a pain to fix as the software can be cranky with code sometimes), but I wouldn't alter what people wrote unless it was libellous or grossly offensive. If this forum gets wildly popular I may ask others if they'd be interested in becoming a moderator in case I'm not around, but at the moment it's not necessary. As it goes I'm the only person who can make changes to the site.

Thanks for that. I've always wondered how websites really work. I'll probably make my own one day, although no point making one about the Beatles since that niche has been filled, and filled well.
I did lose what I had written when I got the sum wrong. Last time I posted and I typed in the answer, it gave me a list of answers I've typed in in the past, which was weird and I might have accidently pressed one last time making me get the answer wrong, I don't know; it doesn't matter too much.
Thanks.
If you need any advice send me a PM. I've been making websites for over a decade – my day job is a web producer and journalist, which has helped me gain the knowledge to run something like this
I'll see if I can turn off the CAPTCHA. I've had a quick look at the admin interface but there are so many options available. As for the list of previous answers, that'll be your browser saving what you've previously entered, and not something controlled by this site. You can probably disable or delete the list in your Preferences menu, should you want to.

I have another question. Is there a way of accessing the article categories (e.g. People, Radio, Interview, etc) from a menu? So far, I've only found them by clicking the category at the bottom of an article. It would be convenient to have easily accessible lists, like the complete history list, for only a particular category.
I could do a list of categories, but the navigation along the top of the page is looking a little cluttered and I’m reluctant to add to it. Less is more
I canl see if there’s an effective way to show the categories, but I’m not even sure whether many people would be interested – this is the first time anyone’s even mentioned them to me.
For the record, these are the categories used: Books; Film and video; Interview; Live; Media; Miscellaneous; People; Photography; Press conference; Press release; Radio; Release; Songs; Studio; Television; Travel; Uncategorized. To view these you can paste in beatlesbible.com/category/ to your address bar followed by the category name, eg travel or release (you need hyphens for more than one word).
Furthermore, these only apply to blog (time-based) posts. The static pages such as the song/album guides and features don’t have categorisation – it’s a quirk of WordPress. Basically I’ve been using the categories because I can, but I don’t want to rely on them for navigation as I don’t think it’s a terribly effective way of finding content.

It’s not a feature that was removed. It uses a system called Gravatar (globally-recognised avatar): http://en.gravatar.com/
The idea is that an email address has an image attached to it. Whenever people comment on a site which uses gravatars, and leave their email addresses, the picture will appear automatically.
When no gravatar has been set by a person, the default is the AHD’sN pic of the back of George’s head.
It’d be nice if avatars in this forum could be carried over to those on the main part of the site, but I don’t think it’s possible.

The smileys not appearing when editing a post is a quirk of the software. Hopefully it’ll be addressed in a future release.
There is a way to do it, though it requires some guesswork. Each of the smileys has a shortcode. For example, : ahdnr 8 : (without the spaces) gives (A Hard Day’s Night , Ringo pic 8).
Some numbers are missing because I uploaded replacements later on. The other option, of course, is to copy the image location of another smiley and use html to include it in your edit, but that’s a bit of a nuisance too.

When you start a thread, or reply to one, below the box where you type there are some options. One of them is ‘subscribe to this topic’. Check that and you’ll get an email whenever someone else posts in the thread. You have to set alerts for each thread you’re interested in following.
There’s another option, ‘watch this topic’ which I haven’t used. I presume it adds a notification when you next visit the site, if there are new posts for threads you’re tracking.
The font’s quite small. I’ll fix that when I get a chance (quite a few of the fonts on the forum are too small; I need to check all the different areas and make them the right size).
If you don’t see those options let me know. I have an admin account which is slightly different from yours, so some things might be elsewhere.

Ok,basically you're looking at the post you want to add a picture to, you open a new tab, find the pic you like, right click on it and choose 'View Image'. Copy that url, go back to your post and click the little tree picture. A small window will pop up and and you paste the url in the first line and click 'Insert'. If you did it right, you'll see the picture. It works the same way in signatures.
Hope this helps.
Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!
Thanks Skye.
