I’m able to linkify certain keywords on the forum, so when they get mentioned they automatically point to articles in the main part of the site. I think sometimes the albums/songs/profiles get forgotten about, so this will give them a bit of promotion. Especially the solo sections for John and Paul – I’ve put quite a bit of work into then but haven’t really worked out how best to let people know they’re there.

Also, internal linking is very good for search engine optimisation (SEO), so it might help my Google ranking if people are looking for, say, Sgt Pepper . I’m only going to link to my features, not Amazon links or anything spammy.

I’ve tested it so far with album and song titles. Every time a title gets mentioned it’ll hyperlink it, which may become a bit distracting if a conversation uses the same title again and again. We’ll see. Also it gets confused when two names are similar, so “Let It Be Naked” just links the first bit (to the LIB album page).

If people don’t absolutely hate it I’ll roll out to cover people, as well as some events (Our World, Apple Rooftop). Where there’s an album and song with the same name I’ll just link to the album. When there’s a generic word (eg Yesterday , Flying , Something Help ! – it doesn’t like punctuation anyway) I won’t let it link at all.

Test: Revolver , Abbey Road , What Goes On , Your Mother Should Know .

That’s what I was curious about when I noticed the linking.

Seems like a good idea, especially for newer fans. If we’re talking about something like the Carnival Of Light (if that links), for example, they can click it, know what we’re talking about, and give the main site more traffic.

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

I found out it’s possible to have case-sensitive entries, so yesterday won’t autolink but Yesterday will. Should be easier when people use generic words in conversation.

Can you overwrite the automated link with another link, say for instance a clip of All You Need Is Love that doesnt really warrant a full video in the thread/post? Let’s give it a go. Cool, you can. Good to know.

After much well-meaning pestering from @Ahhh Girl and others I’ve finally sorted out some simple affiliate links for Amazon and iTunes. These help give the Beatles Bible a bit of extra income, at no cost to you.

The links are in my autosignature, and should automatically take people to their country’s version (eg amazon.ca, .co.uk).

Obviously there’s no obligation to use these, but it would be appreciated if you remember!

When you click on the iTunes link (http://georiot.co/beatles), I get 7% of any purchases made in the next 24 hours.

For Amazon (http://georiot.co/azbeatles) it varies by product type, but averages out about the same. Again, it’s for purchases made within 24 hours, but any items placed in a shopping cart can earn commission for up to 89 days if a purchase is eventually made.

Lastly, the links should take you directly to Beatles-related products, but it doesn’t matter what gets bought.

Thanks for the added information about items saved in carts still earning commission for you if they are ordered within 89 days. That really helps.

I just spent about $35 on iTunes two days ago! I have about 5 left I was planning on spending, so I guess you’ll get 35 cents from me!

On my phone it opens the app, just curious as to how it works, it’ll still go thru on mobile, correct?

I’m not going to spend much money on iTunes, because really I’m not gonna spend $11 on one album on iTunes when I can spend the same $11 on 4 CDs at my record store.

But if I buy a movie on iTunes or something, I’ll be sure to use it. And definitely for amazon

Thanks! And yes, it should work that way on mobile and desktop – the web links should launch the iTunes app on any device (if it’s installed), as there’s no way (AFAIK) to buy files directly through the website.

Yeah, I only use iTunes for their exclusive files, such as the bonus Love songs. Normally I’d buy hard copies – Amazon gets way more money from me, though I know a lot of people don’t like either company.

We’ve had a few instances lately of people deleting all their posts after being part of conversations. It makes it very confusing. So I’ve made a couple of changes which may be temporary, may be permanent.

You can now edit your own post only until someone else has replied, and you cannot now delete your own messages. If you say something in error and it really cannot remain please flag it to a mod. Otherwise embrace your mistakes – we’re all human.

To flag a post for a mod to delete, would a forumpudlian just need to click on the flag icon by the post they want to have deleted? or would they send us a PM?

If the former, what type of notification will the mods receive?

Just report it with the flag icon and I’ll get an email about it. Or people can post publicly and any of the mods can pick it up, whichever they think is more appropriate.

I deleted a photo post the other day because I just couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to make it work right :)

No one had replied though so no confusion there.

I tried putting the link in and entering the full size picture dimensions and I tried just posting links straight into the post but everything was coming up as having ?w=200 appended to it so the thumbnails in the post looked OK buy when you click on the magnifying thimgummybob it would just be a really blurred pic in the larger frame and then if I clicked on that it went back to being a thumbnail. *scratched head*

Anyway long story short, are their instructions here for how to add pics on this site properly so that I don’t screw it up? and if not can you just tell me please? Thanks!

Joe is looking into the blurry picture thing.

https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..5/#p110712

Joe said

Regarding the image popups being of low quality, that was caused by me moving images onto a different server to save bandwidth (I won’t explain in detail because it’s slightly boring and techy). The other server resizes images to automatically display the most suitable version. However, in this case it was displaying the thumbnail correctly, then enlarging the same thumbnail image so it appeared blurry. It was clever, but not clever enough.

The best fix is to disable the thumbnail enlargement thing, so instead of it showing the full size as a popup, it takes you away from the forum to the image’s location on the web. So clicking on the image in this post takes you to the full size jpg file.

If it’s still doing weird stuff for people I can disable the thumbnail thing altogether, so people get the full size image in the post. It’s up to you lot – let me know.

May I make a case for allowing us to continue editing ours posts? I sometimes add information I find later to a newsish post when it would more irritating and spammy to make a separate post.

I’d rather folk can’t go back and edit posts after replies as it can screw up what has been said previously, also if folk want to delete their posts and cant then they can just go back and erase all the text making it still looks daft and ruining the thread.

While I can understand not letting forum posters delete their own posts, I thought of another reason I’d like to suggest keeping the ability to edit, which is that we can go back to fix for formatting issues/bugs. I have to do this often with the ongoing issue of quoting someone, where someone else’s entire post gets requoted, rather the actual reply I’m making to it. But if someone responds right away, I can’t make the fix. Just kind of a pain to make duplicate posts, then having to PM a mod (and hoping they get the message) to delete the first just because of a formatting bug.

And, btw, this post right here is also an example of something I would rather have added to my above post as an edit, rather than making a separate one.

Anyway we could use the same thing for deleting as is in place for editing, where you can only delete before someone responds? I’ve made posts that I immediately regretted, so if I could still delete those, but not ones that had been replied to, that’d be good.

I’d be happy with being able to delete and edit posts until someone responds but after that they are locked for eternity unless a mod accesses them or the forum disappears. Too many threads have been ruined by folk going back and deleting what they have written and folk have subsequently responded to.
