Just a heads-up, there’s a major upgrade of Simple Press which I’ve been putting off, but I’ll probably do tomorrow morning (UK time, when most in the US are asleep). They’ve rewritten a lot of the underlying code which will hopefully be more efficient. It’s quite a major upgrade and will involve updating the theme (skin) and plugins too.

The forum will be in maintenance (read-only) mode shortly before I start the upgrade, so hopefully nobody’s posts will be lost if I need to roll back to an earlier version.

I’ll try to complete the work as soon as possible, but there may be some teething troubles. If things are broken I’ll do my best to fix them ASAP. I’ll start the work approximately 22 hours after this post.

Edit: I just did the upgrade process on a test installation. Everything updated OK, it took about 30 minutes (I was documenting it as I went, so should be quicker tomorrow). It didn’t seem to bring any obvious speed boost but at least nothing seems to be broken. So I’m cautiously optimistic about tomorrow.  

OK, I’m doing this now. The forum will be in read-only mode until it’s complete (I’ll update this post when it’s done).

Edit: All done. It took just under 20 minutes. Please let me know if anything has broken.

OK, I hadn’t checked it on mobile. I’ll have to look at this tomorrow, though. Sorry.

OK, I’ve had a dig around the stylesheet files, and it’s going to be difficult to change/remove the arrows without creating further difficulties with the other icons (pinned, locked, attachments etc). They all use the same visual language, so it’s all-or-nothing really. The only real options are to a) wait and hope that the skin gets updated to look better, or b) switch to an alternative one which looks better.

The latter would be doable if I had time to customise it to look presentable, but at the moment I don’t. So I think for now we’ll have to live with the arrows, and hopefully after a week or two we’ll stop noticing them. Sorry I can’t do more at this time.
