Offline I couldn’t make a threaded reply (the place I’d make a reply is a shade of grey in the picture). I’ll try on Windows 10 instead of iPhone 5c.
It would work on Windows if I wanted to make a threaded reply. But I don’t right now, so I won’t.

Offline Hi everyone. Long time no see. At some point I’ll tell you about my 2018 (it wasn’t great), but for now I’ve got a quick update.
I’ve been working on speeding up the forum, because for ages it’s been running incredibly slowly. Unlike the rest of the site it can’t easily be cached on the server, because it wouldn’t then show recent posts etc. So each page load involves various php elements being assembled on the fly.
The forum’s been going for a little over a decade, and in that time various new elements have been added – birthdays, rankings, watches, and so on. Each of these aspects used up more server resources, with the net result that the forum became very sluggish. It’s something that’s bothered me for ages but I’d never been able to work out the precise cause.
So today I experimented by disabling various features, and managed to get a page load time down from around 10 seconds to 4-5 (twice as fast, so yay, but it’s still not great. I’ll keep working on it).
The downside? OK, I know people don’t like changes, so please don’t shout at me. I might be able to restore some of these if the outcry is deafening, but please be aware that each one will make everything slower. Here’s the list of what I’ve disabled:
- Birthdays
- QuickTags HTML editor (it was one of the optional editors which I think could be selected in a user’s profile)
- Preview
- Thanks (I’d rather not have lost this, but the difference was remarkable)
- Rankings (A Beginning > Apple Rooftop. Again, a shame to lose it, but it has made a big difference on load times).
- Search (described as “A Simple:Press plugin for displaying search results by post instead of by topic”. We still have the standard search, but tbh Google is often better anyway.)
- Uploads viewer (browse previously-uploaded images)
- Watches
I’m sure each one of those will have its advocates, but I need to strike a balance between speed and functionality. So I hope you understand.

Offline I noticed that the forum was especially slow this morning. I thought it may be my internet but I was able to stream video with ease. Now the forum is extremely fast. It is a shame birthdays got disabled the day before my birthday. I was also hoping to reach the rooftop but its not super important.

@Richard – testing to see if Richard gets this mention. I used preview a lot to make sure my @tts were correct because I was using the now disabled editor. Looks like this editor will find the right @tt for me.
I’m glad I remember that shift+enter is the trick to single spacing in this editor.
We can make a list of birthdays and pin them as post 1 of the birthday thread. PM your birthday, and I will make that post.

Offline Hmmm, that’s interesting. The rankings has been deactivated, but deleting the plugin altogether would zap the data altogether. That might be why it’s still showing. I’ll see if I can find a way to remove it from below people’s locations.
Sorry about the missing editor. I think you were one of the very few (only?) who used it. Can you get by with the default one?
Edit: Yep, the admin bar worked once I’d turned it off and on again. Glad it’s working now (admins only, don’t worry everyone else)!

Offline It seems that the Forum Ranks plugin was a way to display badges next to people’s names etc. So I didn’t need it after all. As far as I can tell the existing ranking system will remain, and people can progress as before. Phew.

Offline Good point. It looks like it uses a limited editor on mobile devices. It’s not something I can control I’m afraid. Probably the best way round it is to type [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] tags (without the gaps).

Offline Forum is definitely working faster, which is great, especially on mobile. If you do end up restoring any of the features, I cast my vote for the thanks feature, but as @Ahhh Girl said, we now have more incentive to write interesting replies anyway

The thanks feature would be the only thing that I’d want back if possible too. Is there anyway you can re-enable that one feature and let us give feedback on the speed?
