There was an update today.
So there was. I’m not sure I like it yet, but I suppose when I get used to it it shall look quite normal.

Hi everyone. In my self-appointed role as Killjoy General I’m introducing a forum change. From now on I’m going to stop people from editing their username.
I know some people like to mess around, vary their usernames and swap identities with other people. It becomes hugely confusing for others, though, so I’ve removed the option. It seems to have retained any name changes already made, so people won’t be reverted back to the username they signed up with (if they subsequently changed it).
If you need to have your username changed from the current one, I’ll have to do it manually from now on. I’d rather not have to do it often, but if you really need something changed please send me an email (contact form at the foot of every page) detailing your current and preferred usernames.

I’ve also just applied a forum software update. Info here. Some changes made to new post notifications and PM inboxes. Hope it all works out…

Now I get the new post label thing. I’ll test out PMs.
The new PM layout is much better than before though the pm box is a little funky.
The username thing seems extreme since we more or less got off that right now and changes are infrequent and can be dealt with by PMs. I think it would be better to disable this on a case by case basis rather than disable it for everyone.
If you can't log in and can't use the forum go here and someone will help you out.

A lot of forums don’t allow username changes without contacting admin/mods/owner beforehand so its moving alongside those; a quick glance at Facebook shows the same.

This is quite true. Many forums do not allow this without going through admin first, and even then they don’t want it to be something that happens all the time.

Can’t be done, sorry. The available options are to a) let everyone change their names whenever they like, or b) let nobody do it. As the others pointed out, most forums don’t offer the feature, and after reflection I decided it’s not something I want to offer here either.

Ah ok. Thanks for responding.
With PM’s I was testing them out and they are locked in place so if someone responce in a PM thread, the PM wouldn’t move so with a new PM, you have to sort through to see where the responce was from.

Can someone explain to me why this is an issue? Is it because the moderators can’t take a joke?
That being said, it’s your forum, you can do what you want with it. We don’t have to post here if we don’t enjoy it.
I think there does seem to be a general move on the forum away from fun and self-expression toward being tidy and rule-abiding, though.

Everyone gets used to usernames and who people are, when they are changed it brings confusion to many to who is posting, and to a lesser degree if a certain individual is even on the forum anymore.
Personally I have no idea why folk can’t select one name and stick with it.

Okay, maybe that’s true. But when you tag a person it shows their original username.I feel a little bit singled out because this rule was created after I changed my identity. No harm was done.
When you tag a person it shows up but not when you are scrolling thru and reading posts. It’s important that people know who each other are when having conversations and reading thru posts otherwise confusion and frustration creeps in and it becomes a hassle trying to work out who it is you are speaking to; recognising the username also does alter how you write and respond in a post as you get to know the individual you are replying to.
The change is not due to one single instance or because of one person, it’s been coming for a while and been discussed by the mods a good few times so there is no reason for you to feel it was down solely to yourself.

We did discuss this behind the scenes. If there is a legitimate reason for the name change – trying to stay one step ahead of the law, gender reassignment, etc… – Joe will be happy to accommodate you.

Anyone who thinks I can’t take a joke knows nothing about me. Nothing. In addition, Joe has one of the longest leashes of anyone I know. So, perhaps this “general move on the forum away from fun and self-expression” is just perception and not reality. Everyone else here seems to be enjoying themselves. I hope you can as well. Besides, Yoko needs you as one of her few advocates on this Forum.

As mmm said above, nobody is being singled out. It had been done before by quite a few as part of what some thought was a joke to swap identities. However, they fell far short of the desired comedic effect – and trust me…I know comedy. When it stopped, we were hoping that was the end of it. We were wrong. I do not participate in any other Forums, but if it is true that very few of them allow name changes there must be something to it.

If someone grows tired of their username after a while of using it would that be acceptable grounds for change? Or if they think of a better name soon after joining? (Since that why I see most people change their names)

Great question, Star Shine?. If I know Joe as well as I think I do, it will be on a case-by-case basis. You’ve been on this Forum long enough to know as well as I that there are not many hard and fast rules around here.
On this issue, I personally think too much is being made of it. It’s really no big deal. if the request is legit, so be it. If not, why do it?

On the Elvis collectors forum, you can change your name if you contact an administrator, and I changed mine for exactly the same reason you mention, @Starr Shine?. All I could think of when I joined was the lackluster “Hound Dawg,” but then later I thought of the much better “Arvis Paisley.”

Joe would be cool with that kind of change. In the mod email we had, he mentioned my name change and Ron Nasty’s name change. Those types of big name changes are fine.

It’s not that you cannot change the username in any circumstances, anyone who wishes to do so can contact Joe and ask and he will consider the request.
