Offline @Starr Shine? noticed that I locked and redirected a thread instead of merging the posts into the established thread on the topic. The mods are working through this change. If Google has indexed a page, moving posts causes broken web links. Googe penalizes the site for having broken links (the site won’t come up early in the resutls list when doing a Google search). We want people to find us and join us 
because this place is fab.
So if a mod can’t get a post (or posts) moved before Google grabs them, we will probably do more lock and redirects.

Offline Hi. I’ve been a bit quiet lately, but I’ve been working on bits and pieces behind the scenes. Mainly fixing broken links, of which there are many (mostly in the forum). It’s a time-consuming, boring job.
You might notice that we have four new members, named John Lennon , Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr . Please don’t get too excited – I wanted their birthdays to appear on the forum each year, so I registered accounts in those names and filled in the relevant settings in their profiles. John’s birthday is up next on 9 October.
I’m not planning to use them for any other purpose (I am, though, somewhat surprised that nobody else had grabbed those names in all this time).
Here’s a screengrab for posterity (edit: the site seems to have squashed it down a little, not sure why). I wish I’d registered them last-to-first so they appeared in J,P,G,R order.

Offline I guess those names are sacred enough that no one who signed up here would have dared use them…or people were afraid of getting sued for some type of false use of a name. We found out that names can be duplicated so someone in the future could use those names.

Offline @sarah machinella registered Paul’s name first, but changed his display name afterwards. I have a list of registered accounts, but not the forum display names. I don’t think anyone else is using the other Beatle names (most people don’t bother changing their display names), probably for the first reason you mentioned.

Offline The mod’s list would be quite long. Hmmm. . . Maybe if he made a special category that appear at the bottom called The Beatles or something and put them in the Beatles group.

Offline PSA: I’m going to make a change to the way avatars work.
At the moment, people can either upload avatar images to my server, or they can link to files hosted elsewhere on the web.
If they upload files I can put a limit on filesizes and limit some of the filetypes that people choose.
It’s less easy if people link directly from other sources. At the moment I think someone is using a 27 MB animation of apples falling onto an umbrella. That slows down page load times enormously, and will be problematic for people with restricted data plans. Not to mention the grey ethics of using a third-party’s bandwidth.
So, from Monday (if I remember) I’ll be disabling remote avatars, and limiting profile images to only those hosted on this site. If you want to upload a new image to your profile before then, please do. I don’t know what’ll happen to remotely-hosted pictures after I turn off the option. My guess is that it’ll revert to the default back-of-George’s-head avatar, but who knows?
I’ve put an upload limit of 500 KB on each uploaded avatar. That’s enough for a profile pic, which should only be a small image, but probably not enough for animated gifs. Sorry for any convenience, but it’s for the greater good.
(For the record, my own avatar is 3 KB, Zig’s is 100 KB, Annadog’s is 5 KB. It can be done. You’ll be fine.)
