Long time no see…
I used this forum semi frequently a few years ago (2010-2012 ish, wow that has gone fast), and actually found myself trailing off around the time that inane chatter threads/posts started to outnumber the Beatles ones. I still use the website from time to time for any of my Beatles trivia/research needs! But I’ve not been very present on the forum, simply because it didn’t seem relevant anymore.
I completely understand Joe’s decision. Obviously higher numbers of visitors is a good thing, but it must be becoming an impossible thing to moderate, as well as a chore when it’s topics that mods have no interest in. I also love how Joe is taking all these suggestions in, because he’s not doing this to force users away, but to get the forum back to being fit for purpose.
I know a lot of people using the ATN thread are disappointed, so just wanted to say my opinion on it / the other side of the argument.

If it is a problem of mod interest, could always get more mods to share the work load.
If you can't log in and can't use the forum go here and someone will help you out.

It’s not simply that we don’t want to read the thread, that makes it out that any alteration is based on our reading habits for the forum. I don’t have much interest in music theory or fan fiction but I have zero intent on suggesting they could be removed/locked. It’s about deciding what benefits the forum and therefore site, that’s always our foundation. It’s a Beatles forum so it makes logical sense to have it more Beatles outward/inward looking and currently, ATN is a little too crazy.
The ‘What You Eat’ thread is one that would be redirected but no one has said you will never again post that you had rat-au-van for supper, such posts will simply be made in the ‘In My Life … What’s Happening’ (if that’s where it ends up) thread instead of its own. It’s a clean-up to help the more Beatles discussion be more prominent.

That example is funny, we had a what are you doing right now thread that covered all the right now threads.
It was haphazardly merged with the life thread, then the bits of it that were merged were deleted by Joe. So now you are putting them back in.
If you can't log in and can't use the forum go here and someone will help you out.

I have worked on my (kind of messy) list of threads I want to keep + reasons, although I really couldn’t find specific reasons for all of them.
- In My Life – what’s happening in your life currently? (there’s a certain peace of mind and sense of community that comes from hearing what forum members are up to)
- Impossible to Derail (can be highly useful for bits and bobs that couldn’t fit elsewhere)
- Birthday topic (it’s nice to be able to wish someone a happy birthday, and to be wished one yourself)
- You know you’re a hardcore Beatles Bibler when… (it’s funny how the BB finds its way into other things)
- What are you eating right now? (RN’s cooking sounds delicious)
- Whatever happened to.. (sometimes people disappear without much warning)
- Funniest Post/Creative contribution (sooooo helpful for Year-End awards)
- What are you listening to right now? (a cool way of finding how different BBers’ music tastes compare)
- Song you’re on a kick of (ditto)
- Turn it up or down (ditto)
- Updates on WSC (he’s a member of our community, so why should we lose all contact with him for two years?)
- Things we learned today (learning is good, no matter how obscure the information may be)
- Getting-to-know-BBers questions thread (ditto the In My Life thread)
- Concerts you have been to (more discovering of music tastes, etc.)
- Beach Boys appreciation (not only do many BBers like them, but there’s a Beatles connection!)
- Prince (a lot of BBers seem to like him, too, and it’s not like nobody ever posts there)
- Led Zeppelin (erh… pretty self-explanatory)
- “Holy Trinity” albums (I think it’s an interesting concept)
- Rest in peace (I don’t think this needs an explanation, really)
- Your non-Beatles covers (just ‘cause it’s not Beatles doesn’t mean it’s not good)
- Ukulele thread (George loved ‘em)
- What are you reading these days? (Good for possibly discovering a good book yourself)
- Do you have music on the internet? (very similar reason as the non-Beatles covers thread)
- Poetry (I write poetry. Would any other group of people find interest in reading it? Probably not.)
- Pet Peeves (not the most positive of threads, but then again, not everything is fantastic)
- Happiness is a nice thread (Some BBers come here to cheer up/etc. I’m one of them.)
- Songwriting discussion (I write the occasional set of song lyrics. I like listening to other people’s stuff. I can help people with their stuff.)
