I don’t know the overall forum as well as do Joe and all the moderators, but I find it hard to believe that the All Together Now sub-forum is causing — or even CAN cause — any problems, seeing as it’s just one compartment among a majority of compartments devoted to Beatles topics. This statement by Joe —
For a while now we’ve felt that the All Together Now section (ATN ) is a bit out of control. I know the whole point originally was to discuss anything and everything non-Beatles, but we’ve increasingly felt that it’s overrun with chatter about other music, current affairs, politics, sports, and personal matters. It sometimes seems like The Beatles are a sideshow to the rest of the broader forum.
— makes it sound like an inordinate amount of people are coming to BB and gravitating to ATN to the detriment of the 95% of the Forum that’s not ATN . Is that really true? Like I said, as just a guy who likes to visit and pick and choose various topics to comment on, I can’t say one way or the other; but I find it hard to fathom how. Do all these invisible “guests” who come in daily really flutter to ATN like moths attracted to a flame? And to the detriment of the Beatles focus of this forum? If so, how exactly does that work?
Related to this, it is a dearly held belief of mine that off-topic ruminations & banter are a precious part of life, and I would think that having 95% of a forum discouraging such off-topic activity would be enough…

a coffee dessert, yes you know it's good news...
No, it’s not an inordinate amount of people, but some people do clearly just come here for ATN . And I do absolutely think it needs a bit of housekeeping
It works to the detriment of the rest of the forum because fairly often the newly-updated topics are swamped by non-Beatles chatter. It was even worse when we had non-Beatles games running – back then I’d log in and see masses of completely irrelevant posts every day. People didn’t like it when I put a stop to those either, but life carried on.
There will still be a place for off-topic rumination, banter and off-topic activity. The crux of the matter is this: we’re just trying to make things a little more orderly so it doesn’t become a total free-for-all, and to rebalance things a little.

What’s the harm of a fluff thread? It’s not taking up any space on the digital Internet…
It does require actual humans to moderate everything, to make sure people aren’t duplicating links, posting in the wrong place etc. I want to grow traffic and attract new users, but I want them to be here primarily for the Beatles. Otherwise we’re just going to multiply all the bad things about the ATN section. As I’ve said before, there are better places for off-topic chat on most subjects than this site, places with either specialist knowledge being shared or where general discussion is better served.

Thanks Joe for that detailed response. It’s an amusing paradox that I particularly value off-topic meanderings, and yet probably at least 80% of my activity on BB over the years has been in on-topic Beatles convos in various non-ATN threads.

I want to thank Joe and all of the mods for discussing this with us and actually listening to the feedback that the users have been giving them.
I can understand some people questioning this but having read this entire topic I can see that no one is taking this lightly and nobody wants to make this forum only about the Beatles.

Hey, that would be a good name for a thread, for people to bicker: “Time for Fussing and Fighting My Friend”.

That’s not a bad idea. They could also work as lyrics to a song

@Ahhh Girl, you can add me to the list of those who are O.K. with those threads being locked. Those are the exact type of threads that I thought would help to lock, but wouldn’t do much harm. to you for helping us positively progress through this issue by having us take little steps.
As for you, @Ron Nasty, I won’t call you disappointed, but I sure as heck am. Sure, I felt a similar amount of anger in regards to what could happen to the forum I love so much; yes, I thought about leaving; definitely, I want defend my thoughts and opinions and make my voice heard, but I never acted so strongly on those things – it was simply not an action that would help the process move any more smoothly for anybody. I’m unbelievably upset by what you’ve written, and I dearly hope that you’ll reconsider your decision to leave, as many others surely do as well. I love hearing what you have to say about different topics here, Beatles-related or not, and to have you leave over this would damage this community so much more than locking a couple rarely-used threads from yesteryear ever could. I say we leave the lot of this frustration behind, reconcile, and start small, like AG has already begun to do.

I am sorry to disappoint, @WeepingAtlasCedars, but would say the thoughts I expressed had little to do with the subject of this thread. Something my own post reminded me of is that it’s best not to make 2 + 2 = 5. There are things you unaware of.
While I wasn’t intending to post until I was back home, as I told @meanmistermustard a couple of days ago, I owe him a full and abject apology. I was misinterpreting things, making 2 + 2 = 5, and – while I could make excuses, I have none that make the comments I made regarding you in any way acceptable. They were wrong, and I accept they were wrong.
I am truly sorry and hope with all my heart that we can put this ugly and indefensible mistake on my part behind us.
I also apologise fully to @Joe for letting a growing annoyance explode on the forum in the way I did.
I do honestly wish I could offer the same apology to @Zig. However, you made an attack on me and mmm on the forum following our comments on the Parkland shooting, you ended that post by telling us we should both be ashamed of ourselves. You made a point of saying you had privately apologised to mmm, and were making a public apology. I got neither a private or public apology. I only got derision for daring to argue, and attempt to understand, the points you had made. So, your fellow mod is worth an apology, but I am not? Even though you have told us both we should be ashamed of our comments?
However, to respect Joe, I have to be very careful as he wants it kept off the forum, the root of this is an email you sent me, and an email I told you I was incredibly offended by. I won’t go into the details of it, but that was our last private conversation, and by your own account earlier in this thread, instead of replying, you deleted the exchange. I’m afraid I didn’t, either mentally or from my email account.
Happy to discuss and hopefully sort things out between us, but that is your choice. No point in my sending another email for you to delete instead of respond to.
But, either way, on the forum, I promise peace and love.

Let it be dealt with off-forum. No one needs to read the ins and outs and it doesn’t do the forum any good either .
