The forum is acting up badly at the moment (02:50), keeps breaking down or failing to load. I presume its down to another spike of visitors.

Have figured out how to fix the “x topics with unread posts” issue where it jams. Hit cntl + F5 and it will clear the one hanging. If still not right hit cntl + F5 again and it does.

What exactly does cntl + F5 do to fix it?

Ok. Crashed three times tying to post this, eventually showing this

Finally got it to post at 02:58

This is getting pretty hard.

About every 5 minutes, the site gives a “No Data Received” message every time I try to load it for a minute. It’s becoming ridiculous. I appreciate (REALLY appreciate) everything you do, Joe, but this is bad.

I’m not having any problems tonight. The only thing with me is that my PM inbox says I have 2 messages when I’ve already read them.

This is getting pretty hard.

Yeah, mine’s been doing that.

OK, In… Out…. Really I can’t get too annoyed because I know how hard Joe works to keep this going, and I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have this place anymore, so it’s all good.

mmm – ctrl+F5 will clear your browser cache. It sounds like the stats are being cached on your machine, which is why you’re seeing old data. It’s not being cached by my server. Short of going round to everyone’s house and clearing their cache for them, I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it.

Sorry about the “cannot modify headers” error. A few people have reported it now. I did try to find out the cause but drew a blank. I’ll dig deeper as soon as I have a chance.

IJSAFo – Please contact your ISP and ask them to unblock the IP address 72.44.89.46. Try disabling your firewall, antivirus, anything else that might be preventing access. The server is mostly fine (there were 30 minutes of downtime earlier today but my hosts are on it) and your IP is not being blocked by security as far as we can tell, so I really need you to look into it yourself.

I’ve had one phantom unread PM for months now. I think it’s been carried across three different web hosts. I just ignore it.

It’s weird, because I don’t feel like that’s the problem anymore, unless it’s only blocking me every so often. And it’s only the main page that’s doing it, it works fine if I go straight to the forum most of the time. It might be though, I’ll look into it. Thanks again, I feel really bad about all the complaining because I really do love the site. heartapple01

One question. ISP?

Oh, and to shorten my name, I prefer Faceo, as to avoid confusion with the song.

ISP: internet service provider. You said before that the site is fine on a cell network, so I suspect it’s to do with your router, antivirus, ISP or something else. The server, AFAIK, is working fine – I’m getting record levels of traffic at the moment and nobody else is reporting the same issue as you.

That said, if it’s fine for some pages not others it suggests it might be my problem after all. I’m considering switching hosts yet again because Future Hosting’s customer service is pretty terrible – I have to hassle them with two or three support tickets to make them take action on quite simple things. I just need to find someone else that’s not going to hit me with a whole load of new issues. Sigh.

Well a-hard-days-night-paul-11 to you then. I quite like the seriously ridiculous image of you driving round to a user’s house, bursting in to press cntl + f5 and then rushing out to get to the next person’s computer to do the same. Would be excellent customer service. I’m sure we’d put you up for the night, give you a bite to eat and a cup of tea – if you had time.

But on a serous note, as i now know what is causing the blockage and can flush it its fine and i’ll shut up about it.a-hard-days-night-john-5

Its a pain but i know how frustrating it can be having hidden bugs and how hard it can be finding the pesky things so i’ll try and shut about that too, well be a bit quieter. The forum (and main site of course) is amazing and i don’t want you having any more thoughts of closing it down.

And as always thank you.

I think i’ve buttered your ego enough with this so i’ll skedaddle.

It’s really hard to troubleshoot this stuff. To give a bit of background, WordPress is the content management system which powers this site. It allows me to write articles, upload photos etc, and generally works well.

There are also many third-party WordPress plugins which offer increased functionality. These let me add maps to posts, run this forum, block spam comments, get visitor stats, cache pages for speedier loading and so on.

The trouble is that some plugins are coded better than others, and unless you’re a programming ninja it can be difficult to troubleshoot them successfully. Some add JavaScript or other code to the pages, and occasionally this conflicts with scripts added by other plugins.

On a smaller, less high-profile site I’d just switch to a default WordPress design, turn the plugins off, and re-enable them one by one until I can work out what’s causing the errors. Sometimes I do that anyway, normally when the USA is asleep so most people don’t notice. But it’s impractical and often doesn’t fully isolate the issue.

Also, errors like “Cannot modify header information” only really occur when people are using the fully-functioning site, appear sporadically, and cannot be reproduced in a test environment. I rarely see them, and if I do a browser refresh normally fixes things. Some people’s net connections aren’t so good and they struggle to load pages, but TBH I can’t be responsible for that. So there are many variables which can lead to errors, not all of them my problem. Although I try to look at each issue that comes up, I’m not a programmer so can only go so far.

Before using my current hosts I had an unmanaged (blank slate) server, and paid someone to set it up, tweak it for performance etc. He got into a bit of a mess with an overcomplicated setup, found he wasn’t always available or able to troubleshoot it, and recommended I went with a managed hosting provider instead. So I did, and although the server is mostly more robust and faster (though I have been getting some downtime which I’m not happy with) I don’t get the very precise attention I might have had with a single support person. My web hosts are responsible for server performance but when it comes to software issues they tend not to get too involved (this is fair enough – they can’t be expected to deal with everything I make and break here). There’s no real ideal solution as far as I can tell, although I am looking for a better managed host.

It’s a good thing you’re not all paying customers, isn’t it? a-hard-days-night-george-10

Thanks, Joe.

The Beatles Arrive in New York City TODAY!!! thread will not load all the way down the page. I tried approaching it from multiple links, I tried reloading it about 10 times, I waited a few hours and tried again, and it just won’t go all the way down. I can see the next post window, but there’s no post in it, and then the page just ends. Whenever this happens, the New/Recently Updated topics and the Select Forum drop downs at the top also don’t load. Just letting you know. Thanks

Just like to say that the PM notifications are a mess for me, the numbers of unread that show up are fluctuating widely with little relation to what is actually there. If anyone has sent me a PM and i haven’t replied its because i have no idea what is old, new, outstanding or replied to. Even when i click mark all read it comes back with 1, 2 or 3 unread. It’s currently saying 5, a minute or two ago it was 1 yet nothing is new.  Is this a cache problem or something designed to put me in a mental home?

I won’t touch that mental home line with a barge pole.

Same thing happened to me just now. When I first logged in, my notifier said 3. I was not surprised as earlier this morning I was carrying on three different PM conversations. When I went into the PM inbox there was nothing new (at least I saw nothing new).

When I refreshed my screen, all was well in PM land once again.

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Why would i use a barge pole, surely a finger is easier when dialing numbers? ahdn_paul_01

Refreshing isn’t doing much good. Goes to a different number for a few minutes and then back to what it was before.

We really should just turn this place in a Calvin and Hobbes forum.

I can see my reply to you, mmm, this time after the last one didn’t make it to you. Hope you are seeing it.

Speaking of PM wonkiness, I can only see wetsroosa’s posts in every PM thread I have with him. It used to be just one of the threads. Now it is all of them.
