I realize this may seem to be a rather trivial topic but hey, this isn’t a scholarly forum on Shakespeare, for crying out loud!
Anyway, I’d like to advocate for a principle, that when referring to Beatles songs, it’s more respectful to type out the whole thing than to use a couple of words or to abbreviate.
Thus, taking the tedious trouble to type out “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?” or “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window ” or “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide, ‘Cept For Me and My Monkey” or “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ” with the appropriate capitalization, punctuation and quotation marks is a way of respecting the art, I say. Much better than, WDWDIITR or SCTBW or EGSTHCFMAMM or OLDOLD…

Ha ha, nice one. I sometimes need a Google search to work out what song folks here talk about (particularly when they talk about bootlegs I have never heard of before). Maybe we just need a glossary thread (if we don’t already have one that someone can point me at)?

I get what you are saying, it takes seems like for ever to type out Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey and then yo have to check punctuation and then correct typos. And we are on a Beatles site. I will try but I may occasionally slip up and I will probably do the shorthand if the title is already in my thread (I cant copy and paste here on IE (internet explorer) for some ridiculous reason).

This is especially troublesome and lazy of some posters who constantly abbreviate the many Beatles’ one-word titles, like H (Help ), W (Wait ), G (Girl), A (Anna), T (Taxman ), J (Julia )… I mean, how the heck are we supposed to know if you’re talking about “Boys ,” “Birthday ,” or “Blackbird ,” when you just write “B?”

Not that bothered by it, some of the titles are damn long and annoying to type out on a phone (on a laptop/computer) it’s easier. Sure everybody knows what I’m talking about with LitSwD, WMGGW etc. Cumbersome titles, also works with albums as well SPLHCB and for solo ATMP , JL/POB etc. etc.
Hmm – I just had to Google LitSwD; it seems obvious to me now, but until I had …….

Wow wow wow wow wow, the disrespect in this post is NOT okay.
I believe it is “Why don’t we do it in the road?,”
and also, “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey” THERE IS NO ‘FOR’! (I used to think there was a ‘for’ in the title, too, though, so it’s understood)
I don’t know, I don’t really find it disrespectful to abbreviate, or shorten a title. I do that with Sgt. Pepper ‘s. Even The Beatles did that, it’s not disrespect, it’s a term of endearment.

I had to think about it for a moment. I have seen the abbreviations for Sgt Pepper and Plastic Ono Band; however, the rest I had not.

unknown,
Yeah, with “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey ” (the “to” is uncapitalized I just learned also), I was tapping into my memory of what they sing — which is, indeed, “Everybody’s got something to hide ‘cept for me and my monkey”.
And you’re also right about “Why don’t we do it in the road?” being uncapitalized.
I stand by my principle and will endeavor to live up to it.
Perhaps some readers didn’t get my point: I think it’s a way to show respect for the artists and their art: the Beatles. The fact that it’s slightly annoying and tedious is part of the price to pay.
Sure, there are times where a shortening or nickname is a term of endearment; but when the intention is just to spare oneself bother, that would be a rather disingenuous defense.

I only abbreviate long titles, like Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hmusts Club Band, but most titles like Thank You Girl and Please Please Me I spell out since they’re not as long. Also I mainly access this site in mobile now, it’s pretty tedious especially when my phone autocorrects portions of two separate words and makes them some gibberish.
And if you saw my love, I'll love her to.

I don’t abbreviate any song titles. Not Even Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict by Pink Floyd.
I’ve never tried to abbreviate or type the full name of that song. I just try to avoid conversations where it comes up.

Someone should check out the Pink Floyd fan websites (the Pink Bible?), and see how they refererence “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict.” I suspect even Roger Waters would refer to it as SSoSFAGTiaCaGwiP.
According to Wikipedia, there is a hidden message in the song at approximately 4:32. If played at half speed, Waters can be heard to say, “That was pretty avant-garde, wasn’t it?” Also, at the very end of the rant, Waters is heard to say, “Thank you.” I’m not much of a Pink Floyd fan; I’ve never heard this song, or sound collage, or whatever. But it must be pretty avant-garde.
I always write out the names of Beatles songs in these posts. I think it looks better.

Ah, I wondered if you were going to ask this, FP.
It’s a pain to type it all out sometimes, so I understand why people do it – and you know that I do it sometimes. Thing is, this is a Beatles forum, so I suppose most people assume you’ll know what they mean if that particular song/album has already been mentioned.

Are the long ones that hard to get for folks? SPLHCB , EGSTHEMAMM, BFTBOMK, HCTS. I don’t mean that in a patronising way, more that I never thought they would be difficult to understand. Going into the world of solo songs would be more difficult. Would anyone know what NTSGA referred to?
Have no idea how anyone would have a clue what B, or H was tho, writing Boys or Blackbird doesn’t take that much time. Technically Anna should be A (GTH).

“B” could stand for “Boys ,” “Blackbird ,” or “Birthday .” That’s a good useless trivia to file away; what letter of the alphabet represents the most one-word Beatle song titles? Could come in handy some day, on a quiz show.

Now that I know it is easy to Google them, I’m fine. I’ll get better at recognizing them as time goes by.
